CBT Therapy for Anger

ORIGINAL POST

I get suffer from extreme anger attacks over actually quite trivial things - they come out of the blue and I say the nastiest things to my partner and just can't stop no matter what. And then about a day later I calm down and realise what I've done. I read that CBT therapy can be helpful but can anyone recommend a CBT therapist in HK? Is that the same as NLP?

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. It seems that the therapist trains you to think more positively, eg predict positive outcomes, assume people have good intentions and if things don't seem right it's not intentional. I guess it is like positive thinking in sport. Found a good article about it here.

The thing that is attractive is that it seems to be limited in time and structured (rather than sitting for ever waffling, trying to find the root cause). Trouble is - who does it in HK?

I believe that anger can be a symptom of clinical depression. Do you have a good G.P.? They should be able to give you some help in either diagnosing the cause of your anger, or referring you to somebody qualified to help you appropriately.

Have you always been angry? Or is this since you came to HK?

Anger is also one of the phases of culture shock.

I was angry for over a year.

Now I have moved on to the latter stages of adaptation.

I've been in HK close to 20 years (maybe that's why I'm angry?). With reference to clinical depression - I don't think I'm depressed but I am sad about some things in my life -- but I mainly wanted to cut out the middle man (or woman) -- the doctor -- and see if anyone knew a good pychotherapist/therapist. I've read a few books but someone who knows about these things would be helfpul so hopefully someone can recommend...

To be honest, I find it hard to believe that you are sure you dont suffer from depression or that you can't control what comes out your mouth. The question was of course, have you been this way for 20 years? If thats not the case...are you old enough to be menopausing? Just asking...coz when my Mum was menopausing she was un-frikken-bearable and mean! So hmmm...see your GP so you can get your blood checked, by this I mean, they check your various organ functions to see if there is something malfunctioning, coz believe it or not depression can be caused by everything from liver malfunction to a thyroid problem....what I am trying to say is, your GP can make sure that there isnt anything "physically" wrong and then green flag you for getting help through therapy.

How it works is that if you want your insurance to cover it you will generally have to get a referral from a Doc anyway...so yeeeeaaahhh...just think about it, better to know your organs are working the way they should be before you go jumping to CBT which will be expensive, no doubt.

Your need to "skip the middleman" seems to suggest there is a quick or easy route...or hope there is, but really, the other posters advice on a GP first is sound advice. Behavioural therapy can come after you figure out whats really wrong with you and possibly your marriage or environment that has you on such a verbal assaulting path.

Good luck

HI, If you find this thread please don't take any notice of the nonsense written by amateurs here. I had an anger issue for many years, I had CBT and other things which helped but never really got to the bottom of it.

In the end, partly out of desperation, I tried hypnotherapy I went to see the guy at Healthy Minds in Central. All I can say is that it was amazing. I had a total of 5 sessions and it has made an incredible difference to my life. He got to the real root of it and helped me clear it out. I would never have believed this was possible with hypnotherapy had I not had this experience, I even remember wondering if I could be hypnotised, boy was i wrong on that one!!

CBT didnt work for me. It only works when u r still receiving CBT. And all symptoms come back when u stop seeing the therapist
