is it only me that find smokeing is huge turn off

I really dislike when a girl smokes

all cloths smell really bad no matter how nice her perfume smells you only smell the smoke.

kissing a girl right after she had a smoke is like eating from a ashtray, so groose and discusting...bleeh..

girls if you want to attract more men, you dont need bigger boobs, just throw away that silly stinky thing between your fingers.

What if she just smokes socially?

I smoke when I go out for drinks with friends, but I wouldn't usually smoke at home or go out for a smoke at work....

What is constitued as the "disgusting" level of smoking?

Agree with zelda! But most of non-smokers are not tolerant! We smokers are in general also more socialable and i.e. in a smoking area, it is allowed not to smoke....joke

Zelda -- it sounds like you are supporting segregation!

Smoking is bad for your health, and being a smoker shows that you're not a conscientious person. The hatred you're expressing toward non-smokers who don't like to be around smokers is also showing you to lack compassion for others' feelings and concerns for their own health and comfort.

Well, you've got a few years left where you'll have the right to smoke in a bar, restricting your socializing to smoke tolerant friends, I guess.

And it's not just health, it's comfort. When you go into your office in the morning after your morning "fag", your clothes and breath stink, even if it's imperceptible to you. Your colleagues might be uncomfortable with the smell, and they have the right to feel that way. You may not know it, but you are imposing your stink on them.

Even in public this happens. It is really very rude to take your stinky clothes and foul breath and sit down or stand next to someone on the MTR.

Personally, I don't care what you do if it doesn't affect me. But the minute you sit down next to me on the MTR or stand there on a street corner blowing smoke while I have to wait for a traffic light, you're affecting me, and I have the right to object to your lack of consideration.

zelda, my point was not if smokeing shold be tolerated or not

just said many people dont like to kiss an ashtray.

since the fight are already started

I can give you 10 reason why not to smoke

can you give 10 reason why any person need to smoke?

you said takeing risks. if I want to climb mountains without ropes, yes fine I am takeing risk, if I fall I die..no one else will get hurt

if you smoke and I am near you I will get affected by your unhealtysmoke

I dont tie you around my waist when I going to climb and force you take same risks I do.

I realized long before it happened to my fathersmokeing was bad

you said smokeing not dangerus, how come my father died of lungcancer from smokeing?

have you seen a 100kg man waight less than 35kg without hair and must have things down his throut to breath and eat?? I have..it is 100% fact smokeing is dangerus and deadly.

if you dont care about your health, fine..but let me chose if I want to smell smoke or not

parfume is not dangerus, smoke are

you are totaly right, there is lots if other tings in our lives that are dangerus too

but has to start somewhere and cars get cleaner and cleaner every year and more and more alternativ in out on market

what would you say if a car parked at the seat next to you when you are esting on resturant?

you tell him to turn off engine and he does, but 5 mins later engine is on again

someing is fine for those who choose doing it, but respect people who dont want to smoke.

passive smokeing is same danger as a person who smokes.

being a smoker or non smoker is the same, you can do same things with or without a ciggarete in your hand.

so the argue smoker have more social things is bullsh*t, you can take a break and go out and chat with people without a cig too.

enought about this fight

lets talk about the real topic

are smokeing attracive or turn off

Hi Druzzil,

to answer your question - SMOKING IS UNATTRACTIVE, A TURN OFF AND UNHEALTY FOR BOTH MALE AND FEMALE. PORTRAIT A POOR IMAGE TO CHILDREN.

I believe, by now, you have a pretty good idea that you are definitely not alone feeling the way you are. And I respect the fact that it's really a personal choice to inhale and exhale the carcinogenic substances. I am so super positive that, by now, the smokers are well informed on how detrimental smoking is to health, and the fact that second hand smoking does even far more harm to our health.

If you find smoking a turn-off, then you go looking for a girl who doesn't smoke, even occasionally or socially, in the first place, period. No ifs and buts. End of story.

"girls if you want to attract more men, you dont need bigger boobs, just throw away that silly stinky thing between your fingers."

Again, the smokers will attract those who find them attractive whether they have big boobs or not.

Simply set out your criteria and stick to them when you go looking for your girl. e.g. non-smoker, small boobs, short pixie hair, etc...whatever to your likings.

Restaurants I frequently visited get deserted! They are now handing out 50% discount vouchers...Smokers are forced on the streets...what a poor night-life society here in HK.

The numbers all say that restaurant business has improved since the ban came into effect. I can attest to that. There were many places my girlfriend and I would not go before, and now we finally have the chance.

For every smoker that chooses to stay home because they can't smoke in a restaurant, there are two non-smokers who are more likely to go out.

And have you seen children having dinner at restaurants now? I have. Didn't see many before.

All in all, the ban can only be a good thing. A good thing for overall health of HK society. A good thing for health care costs.

The pressure being put on smokers to adapt to this new paradigm is also definitely a good thing for their future.

1. Smoking is a turn-off for most non-smokers

2. Reformed smokers often are the most vitriolic when it comes to professing their dislike for smokers

3. I too saw an article that stated restaurant business was up since the ban came into effect, as people would leave after eating, rather than sitting around smoking, hence the wait staff clould clear the tables quicker and get the next group in.

4. I thought that at the moment, any "bar" was exempt from the ban until a later late?

5. Finally, whilst I have never smoked, I support all smokers rights to do so, as long as tobacco is a legal product. If a bar is a smokey hell hole, I go to another one that is not. Simple.

poor man, while it may be progress to you having children in restaurants, I don't expect to see them in bars in Lan Kwai Fong. No-one disputes that it's horrible having smoke blown in your face during a meal, but it's rather condescending having heavy drinkers (no, not anyone in particular!) lambasting smokers over health and sociability issues in downtown bars! Yes, I understand the dangers of secondhand smoke but if you frequent some dodgy watering holes in the depths of Wanchai, you'll discover the dangers of secondhand drink.....the obnoxious expat looking for a fight with whoever, shouting abuse, the legless housewife on a girls night out, alternating between crying and throwing up on her mate. Ask yourselves, how long before drinking starts being abolished? What if Hong Kong went the way of the States and had no alfresco drinking? I have no problem with teetotallers being pro the smoking ban, but the drinkers are pots calling kettles.....

Some clarification:

Any and all bars (whether in LKF or Soho or Tai Po) are exempt from the non-smoking regulation as long as food does not constitute a certain percentage of their business. All they need do is apply for the exemption. Seems fair to me.

Some people here seem to be claiming that there are not enough smoking bars in LKF!!!! Believe me there are plenty, and they are not any more crowded than the non-smoking places.

I haven't been, but my guess is that a place like Stormies cannot get the exemption because of their food percentage. Boo-hoo. Go next door.

It's not like there aren't enough places to choose from.

The disgusting smell aside, I really can’t quite see why some people find smokers attractive. I mean who wants to be with someone who has...

* Five times the heart-attack rate.

* Triple the risk of skin cancer.

* Increased severity of existing breast cancer.

* Higher rates of leukaemia.

* Increased risk of cancers of the throat, mouth, oesophagus, kidney, colon, rectal, stomach, pancreas and bladder.

* Two and a half times the risk for stroke.

* Higher risk for lung diseases, such as pneumonia, flu, bronchitis, and emphysema.

* Greater risk for infertility in women.

* Greater risk for ectopic pregnancy and miscarriage.

* Greater risk for stillbirth, prematurity, and low-birth weight.

* Higher degree of impotence in men.

* Reduced sperm density and motility.

* Higher risk for osteoporosis.

* Significantly greater risk for hip fracture.

* Higher risk of developing cataracts than non-smokers.

* Twice the risk for the severe age-related eye disorder, macular degeneration.

* Higher risk for gum disease.

* Five times more likely to develop more and deeper wrinkles.

* Higher risk for baldness and premature grey hair.

* Twice as likely to develop incontinence.

I'm an intolerant nonsmoker - but i think if people want to smoke and poison themselves it's really upto them.

I just mind when smokers blow smoke in my face.

So saying, I must admit to being unlucky as I often end up having good friends who are smokers.

First of all, Daddy Long, I have to say you are right on the money with that comment - no one has the right to dictate what is or is not good for you. It's an entirely personal choice, which I think is the point we are missing in this thread!

Mr Cynical, how can you even begin to think that you have the right to say that smokers BELONG outside??? It sounds as though your regard for a smoker is much the same as what one might have for a dog!!! How can you be so horrible!!??!

well said Zelda.. The taxes alone on cigarettes covers healthcare, as smokers tend to pass on a little faster due to the noxious habit. Be ready for another tax increase on cigarettes, and wines are due for one, regardless of what Mr. Zeman thinks. Last time I looked, cigarettes were a legal product sold to those over 18. Sadly when the warmer weather arrives, even smoking outside will become an issue. LKF/SOHO, one huge ashtray... Anyone feel like opening a 'smoke-easy'...

Hmm If you don't want to kiss an ashtray then don't. Why whine about it? You have no problems holding back from kissing a dog on the mouth..(we hope) why is an ashtray any different? Whats the dilemma? (and yes..ashtray means a woman who smokes)

Is smoking a huge turn off?

I'm an ex-smoker. quit a habit of 40+ a day to zero a couple of years ago.

It is said that ex-smokers are the worst at banning smoking and talking s**t about smokers, but I don't know... I must say that I still think a woman looks very sexy with a cigarette in her hand, don't know why.

Yes, after my sense of taste returned I must admit that it tastes rather stale to kiss someone just after she had a smoke, but the taste nomally subsides quite quickly.

I personally can't smoke anymore because I end up having 40 or more a day with the obvious side effects this has on your body, but I really don't mind people who are able to maintain a moderate habit. If I could keep it at 5 a day, I would never quit and I would certainly not mind a woman who could display such power of mind and control.

It stinks, sorry. If only you knew what your non-smoking colleagues talk about behind your back after you've just come back from your ciggie break. Here is a sample of what I've heard:

Gosh she stinks when she speaks

What's the point of all that makeup and fine dress when she stinks and smells stale

A high school friend of mine has dark gums and purplish lips from all the smoking. Not sexy at all.

I am not against smokers and I appear fairly tolerant of smoking- a lot of my friends are smokers and they are mindful not to torture me in an enclosed area.

So in response to someone else's comment-why does a woman look 'sexy' holding a ciggie? Well, a ciggie is cylindrical, long....and is supposed to go into the mouth

I was born 8 weeks premature and had to go through the incubator thingy too. haha - we are just lucky to be alive. Still, it's possible to quit if we want to, I did a couple of years ago.

to tell you the truth I couldn't walk straight for three days and couldn't focus on anything for weeks after I quit. was well worth it in the end though. Lovely to have one less addiction to worry about.

I still think the damn things are sexy looking and smell nice though.

never really liked the smell of a cigar. No, let me qualify that, I always found the smell of cigars to be quite repulsive. So that's a no from me Jungle..
