I have looked through the threads here but not sure of the correct answer for my case.
I worked in HK till recently before being let go. My work visa and HK ID are valid till Aug end and hence i wanted to visit HK for 30-40 days to interview. Since i would be re-entering HK after termination of services, would i not be allowed to stay untill my previous work visa expires? If not, would i get a visitor visa or a tourist visa? Visitor visa is only 7 days so will not be a feasible option.
All help appreciated

depends on your profession. I thought the HKID has no expiry date. for DH, drivers and cooks their visas technically become invalid after their contracts are overand I think they give you 14 days to leave. For other professions their visas are usually valid till date shown UNLESS YOUR SPONSOR/EMPLOYER specifically tells Immigration that their contract with oyu has been cancelled. ALternatively if they do not travel out of HK it does not become an issue. I went through the same case where I had 18 months left on my visa but quit my job and started on my own. I travelled frequently after this. When I went for the renewal I was told by immigration that I should have told them of my change in job status from employed to self employed. Since my 7 yrs were up they simply said DONT DO IT AGAIN!!! WHy would they give you a 1 week tourist visa anyway?? I thought it was 2 weeks or 3 months for most countries and 6 months for British Nationals.

I was with a hedge fund but I left HK in April to travel around. I am sure my company informed HK gov about end of employment becuase i cleared my taxes before leaving and the form released by my employer stated as much. My work visa was otherwise valid till Aug end.
I am trying to figure out what visa they will give me when i reenter. Would like to be in HK for ~1.5 months so even a 3 month tourist visa would do. But i was under the impression that only a 7-14 day transit visa is automatically given and then i would have to apply to immigration for extension of stay. not sure about the veracity of all this....

As cara said once you are terminated / leave your employer your visa is good to stay in HK until it expires. However if you leave HK the situation will change and you will need to come back in on a tourist visa.
Length of this visa depends on your nationality.
