Does anyone know the correct rules for returning to work after Maternity Leave.
My friend went back to work today after Maternity leave and was told after 2 hrs that she was being laid off... and handed a check for 1 months salary ??
ANY INFORMATION would be appreciated as can not get onto the Labour Department at all

this sounds like the fair procedure: they did not lay her off during maternity leave, waited for her to come back and paid her in lieu of the resignation period (assuming she has a 1 month resignation period and worked there for less than 1.5 years).
the law says you can get laid off and severance pay is 2/3 of one month for every year worked.

"the law says you can get laid off and severance pay is 2/3 of one month for every year worked."
Only after you have completed 2 full years of employment under the same contract.

Thank you so so much for your replies and letting me know the correct terms -
As you can imagine she is very upset after having employed a full time helper etc in preparation of returning to work so your replies have now cleared the air for her -

this is now against the law to laid off someone cause of maternity leave, please go to the labour department and will give you the legal advise..best to go in person and explain also that u have the right to compensate your long term service 5 years or severance payment 2 years.
