Question about Nursing

ORIGINAL POST

Hi there,

I was wondering if there are any nurses out there (specifically foreign nurses) who can help me out. Can anyone offer any suggestion on how to prepare for the Registered Nursing licensing examination? Are their any guide books, online tutorials, etc? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I am an RN from the United States, and am currently applying for my license in Hong Kong.

Thanks in advance!

You can go to the nursing board's website and download their past exams to get an idea of the format. It's nothing like NCLEX b/c long essay and short essay questions are highly valued here. I think something like 30% of the exam is multiple-choice. Once you pass the test (which is held once per year I believe) then you would most likely have to work for free as a shadow for three months. You would need to find your preceptor on your own - they don't help with this. This requirement is for nurses who graduated from a diploma program and not a university program. The whole process stinks and is ridiculous considering that there was reciprocity prior to the hand over and that our educational standards in the US for medicine and nursing are high.

Thank you so much for replying, as I am getting nowhere. I have been on the HK Nursing Council website, and looked through their past exam; that is what caused my initial worry, as it is NOTHING like the American NCLEX. I emailed the council with the same questions regarding any preparation they can suggest, and they more or less told me it is not part of their mandate to offer help in this regard. I have tried typing in "Hong Kong Nursing Examination", or anything related in every search engine, and have come up short each time. As a last measure, I even emailed some of the nursing schools throughout the different universities, and have gotten one reply that offered nothing as well.

Are you a foreign nurse in HK right now? I would love it if I can ask you some more questions. I have a BSN, and didn't know anything about having to shadow another nurse for free, for three months!

Once again, thanks for your reply....it's the first concrete piece of information I have received.
