I did that once. Really wanted to land that job. After the 3rd interview, they said they would have a decision in 2 weeks and would come back to me. I called up the agency to see if I stood a good chance amongst the other candidates; at the same time explaining to them that I had another offer waiting for my decision. They told me honestly that I ranked the 3rd amongst 4 candidates. I really appreciated the info. It helped me to make the decision in a timely manner. In the end I went with the other offer. So I don't think it is bad to call and follow up esp. they promised to get back to you. Though you may prefer to do it close to the time the decision will be made. Good luck!

Thanks Sesame for your advice. I haven't actually got a call yet (sent my resume yesterday)..but I went to a second interview for another job already and have a good feeling I may get an offer, but this new one would be more preferable for me if I had a choice.

Just wondering if it seems too desperate to call up and ask for interview?

Well Strawberry, that will be a different story if you haven't even been contacted for an interview. Yes it does appear to be desperate. Can you wait a couple more days while you are anticipating another offer? Or that company you went for 2nd interview has actually come up with an offer and you have to decide right away? If you have sent your CV yesterday, they will probably call you for an interview within this week. Otherwise, it is likely that your application is unsuccessful.

i disagree, i would call them and explain the situation, that you really prefer (from what you know) the job they have posted and are hiring for but you have another offer... ask them if they have reviewed the resume and plan to interview you, if so, could they kindly move the schedule forward. as a frequent hirer i would have no problem with someone doing this. it shows initiative and interest in the position. if i like their resume and thought i might hire them, i would rather have the chance to interview them, rather than calling them a week later only to find that a great candidate already got another job. if they are not interested they will tell you. no sweat. call.

Employers are pretty quick to get back to an applicant if they fit the bill. So just wait a few more days, if they don't call you by then, you pretty much know it aint going to happen.

As a frequent hirer I tend to agree with Rasbro. There are many applicants out there who are just firing out many applications shotgun style, in the hope that something sticks. You get to recognise them from the style of application.

But, if you can succinctly and lucidly tell them why this job interests you and what you can bring to the party, they are far more likely to call you in for interview. Go for it. You really have nothing to lose.

The employer will have a clear picture by reviewing your CV whether you warrant an interview. I have never heard of anyone following up on an application, personally I think such an act would be deterimental rather than beneficial to your chances.

Thanks for all your replies. this new position is administration related and I imagine they may look for someone relatively mellow- contrast to my current role as a marketing manager- not sure if they want an aggressive admin?! (altho marketing is part of the requirement as well)

Anyway I will wait till the end of tomorrow, fingers crossed on getting a call first!
