Im a journalist contemplating a move to HK, I've been offered around $30k a month - is this enough for my wife and i to live off?

She is a school counsellor, but we're not sure about the availability of jobs in that field. Can anyone help and suggest what sort of wage she would be looking at?

thanks

Not very comfortably. You will have to live out quite far, in a very small place with not too many luxuries. Cost of living in HK is very expensive.

If your employer offers accomodation, then you should be OK.

Depends on your stage in life and expectations of quality and quantity of life.

$30K is about average for a journo- local ones actually make a lot less. You would be looking to live in the less traditional ex pat areas, i.e. away from the over paid finance folk. If you want to be on HK island, try Kennedy Town, Ap Lei Chau/Aberdeen, Quarry Bay, Shau Kei Wan (last 2 are on MTR, others have lots of buses). If your office is Kowloon side, there are plenty of affordable areas there. Not sure how much demand there is for school counsellors, so it may take your wife a while, but in the mean time she could easily get private tuition work, even without a TEFL, given her educational background, that's enough for a lot of people & she could start by charging about $400/hour & see how it goes.
