I recently accepted a part time role with an international company for a 3 year contract.
I wanted a full time role, but with the current market conditions agreed to PT, telling them that I could only afford to do PT as my husband was the primary wage earner and would let them know if my circumstances change.
However, the day before I started working for the company, my husband lost his job. I didn't say anything to them as it felt inappropriate to have changed circumstances so soon.
Due to the sudden departure of a team member, A full time role doing the same tasks has now come up, which I have applied for. I would say I am suitable and just need a little additional training to be fully competent. The team is small, just a 2.5 person team and I want the 2nd person role, rather than the .5 person role.
However, as I have only just started in the PT role, the company are advertising the FT role, even though they know I want the position.
When I spoke to my boss about wanting the role, he said let's wait and see.
I have been working in my job for 3 months now.
Should I speak up and tell them that I need the FT role for financial stability reasons? Or will it seem I am trying to force their arm?
We can afford to live on my FT wage, but we are losing money in HK on just my PT wage.
I don't know how long it will take my husband to find another role, but feel it may take some time and this situation is causing me a lot of worry.
I love working for the company and don't want to mess things up, but this might be my only chance of a FT role for a long while - so I feel like its a case of now or never to let them know my current situation.
Any advice welcome.

Definitely tell them..
In the current job market everyone knows you can be out of work from one day to the next.. Happens to a lot of people at the moment. It won t look bad. Your boss should understand it perfectly.

I conclude:
- You already told them (your boss at least)
- You are still in probation (or just out of it)
- You're under pressure
My tip:
- You already told your boss and he acknowledged your point. If you tell him again, you might come across weird. You can however tell HR as well to reinforce your point.
- The fact that you work for 3 months there and they still advertise it can mean multiple things: They are not satisfied with your performance, hence look for someone else; or they consider you for the FT role but want to see 'what's out there'
- Lats but not least, I don't think when applying for a job the fact that you need the money is a good argument - not when you took the PT role, not now. You are good for the FT role because you have skills/experience, that's what counts.
Just my 5 cents...

thanks to both. I kept quiet about my husband's position afterall. The position has been filled internally by someone else and I have been advised that although I have made a promising start - they needed someone with a proven track record with the company as too many resignations/sackings these past couple of years so have chosen from within. Am disappointed - but life goes on and fingers crossed there will be other opportunities.

I hope your husbands redundency does not effect your visa and right to work?
