Advice needed on job offer

Hi everyone, hope I can get some advice here:

I intereviewed for a job which was a junior postion, so on the expected salary, I put down what I feel should be appropriate for that role (this is actually on the high side). I impressed the hell out of the hiring managers and MD with my presentation and after 2 days, they immediately call me and said they can give what I asked for and offered a higher title then what I applied.

So I went in last week and signed the employment contract and regret not asking for more. Looking back I should have negotiated more due to the fact that I have to work 5.5 days on alternate weeks.

Also, the office is really far away which makes me feel like asking for more now.

Should I suck it up and work there for a few months then ask for a raise? Or should I tell them that I need an salary adjustment before I start? (It doesnt hurt to ask right?) My friend suggested me to ask for a parking allowance or some kind of transportation allowance if they wont budge.

What do you guys think I should do?

Pros of the job: I like what I will be doing, a lot of things to learn, good career path, umemployed at the moment so no opportunity cost

Cons: 5.5 days, office location real far,

Thanks!

My advice is that unless it's a make-or-break situation you should swallow your pride and get on and do the job. You say you are currently unemployed, so roll your sleeves up and impress them first with your performance before asking for more. Frankly soeking, if I was the employer and you came to me at this stage asking for more then unless I was desparate I would very quickly return you to the ranks oif the unemployed. The only way out in my mind is if you believe they deliberately withheld vital infoirmation frm you during the recruiting stages.

I think you really should have been aware of those issues before you signed the contract, and to back on it now would seem quite amateur.

thanks Kenwin for your great advice. It made a lot of sense, I am leaning towards not asking for a raise until my probation period ends. I guess I have to just blame myself for being too desparate and not thinking it out too clearly before i signed!

carmine, point is that even once they offered what you asked, i would react badly as the employer if you then asked for more - except some allowances.

so really, suck up, prove your value and then ask for a raise later when raises are generally due (not after probation)

The advice you really need is to understand the difference of work attitudes between working a job and a career! You'd better always count your blessings so at least you can make it to the end of probation period, kid.

I agree with Cookie, but it should also be pointed out that in fact, they offered you the job with a "higher title". So in fact, it's not a junior position, it's a higher position so you would think it should command a higher salary.

But I agree with everyone else: get started on the job and become friends with your colleagues and boss. Once the probation period is over, you can approach and ask about a higher salary. Regarding allowances, such as parking etc, I don't see a problem with making a casual call to see if they can add those.

Personally, I would refrain from giving reasons though, such as you live far away from the office, you work 5.5 days... You knew this when you applied for the job and you accepted those conditions when you signed, so you can't suddently turn around and cite them as reasons for being given allowances.

Congrats on your new job!

I'm sorry but all your questions should have been considered and asked BEFORE signing the agreement. As an employer, I would immediately lose respect and confidence in you as an employee for reneging on a just signed contract. What does that say of your character? We agreed, shook hands and now it's time to deliver my friend. It's fair to renegotiate after probation.

Carmine. I think you would be mad to ask for a raise even after 2 years - never mind the probation period. You need to bring in a lot of money for the company before they will do that - unless you have some incredible talent that cannot easily be reproduced (such as the ability to take precision free kicks like David Beckham).

or as handsome as him (D.B.), if your boss is female, that would probably work. Equally incredible and indispensable!
