I am hoping someone can give me some advice.
I have been living and working in Hong Kong for 5 and a half years. My contract is up in July/august and I will have lived in HK for 6 years. I consider HK to be my home and I intend to live here permanently. However I have been offered a great opportunity to work overseas for 1 year starting in August. Now to qualify for permanent residency I have been told that you need to be in HK continuously for 7 years. Which means if I take this opportunity overseas I will not qualify.
Does anybody know of any way of getting around this problem? Am I able to remain a resident in Hk without a job and make trips back throughout the year?
Or is it just a case of forgetting about this opportunity if i want permanent reisdency?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Woodhill, if you wish to avail yourself of this great opportunity, then the answer is simply no (unless your new job is with a hk-based company). If you're on an employment visa, you can't remain here once your visa expires, and stay without a job. You need to either find another job and sponsor here.

                                    Hi,
You better inquire to Immigration in 2/F., Wanchai. Tell your problem. Don't depend/rely for others advice.

If your visa is still valid, I believe you can still come and go as you plan to, but once that visa's up, you go back to being a tourist- the only person I know who got round this claimed he had to keep popping back to Japan (i.e. his home, not a third country) to help with the family business. That was 9 years ago and he still keeps "popping back" for a year at a time! I really would check with immigration, but I think you're up the creek...

i heard from someone (not first hand) who successfully obtained a 'stay' on his 7 years, i.e. he had 4 years then went to Singapore for 2 years and then came back and the 7 years continued. to run once he was back in hk.
apparently he spoke to immigration and they were able to do a deal.
