these things happen. my advice: continue with your work which you believe is flawless. ultimately word will go around indeed, but if they play dirty and your work is good, you will be on the laughing end
the thing i dont understand is why you stayed in the job in the first place. when you were pushed aside, you should have understood the hint, and start to look for a new job immediately. then you can resign on your own and move on as per your schedule.
not to look for a job right away and not resigning and not competing was not very clever...

I agree with cookie09. Work place can be vicious. Every now and then bad politics fly. You just need to keep doing high quality job. Sure some people may try to spread a bad word around, but if your job quality is good, then there will be good word of mouth as well. You don't need everyone to like you. (not possible anyway.)
It is important not to dwell on a bad experience. Have a positive outlook. At interviews for new jobs, do not mention about the bad politics. (unless very specifically asked.) Bad office politics makes everyone look bad, including yourself. A new employer does not need to know that.
If other people ask about these other people, try not to open with a bad line. In fact it will work to your advantage by saying somethings good about them. It would make you look really mature, especially if these others have just spread something bad about you.
In the more important areas of work, often the moment a person is let go, they will no longer work at that post. It is common. In some lines of work, such as sales and trading, it is often mandatory.
Oh, there is one big exception to my suggestion of letting it go. That is if they tried to hint you did something illegal. In that case you must defend yourself vigorously, and follow up with legal action if they try to spread such a rumor.

Did you find a new job? Have there been any repercussions? Hope all is going well.
