Visiting Visa - Volunteer work or short course

Hi,

My girlfriend is moving over to HK from the UK and she will be holding a visitor's visa on a UK passport. Can she do unpaid volunteer work? Or do a cooking course or something? I've heard different things on volunteer work but would like to know from someone who has been through this. I just don't want her to be bored.

Thanks.

Your girlfriend is not allowed to do any volunteer work, whether paid or unpaid, I'm afraid as she would be breaching her conditions of stay. With regard to the cooking course, do you mean something official in a culinary school? If so, then she is not allowed to do this either. However, if you're talking about going to one of the hotels in town who have a day in the kitchen with the chefs, then that would be okay.

I think you may be okay with a 2-week cooking class just for fun. Maybe just check it out with the place that's running it and see if you have to be a HK resident in order to do it.

Get your girlfriend to look at the Australian Association website to check where the Social Group have their Friday "Chatterbox coffee" and then go meet people there.

Lots of different nationalities and age groups. She will have no problem meeting like minded women and quickly form friendships to share outings and experiences whilst you are at work.
