Frustrating experiences with recruitment agencies

Hi - I'm currently looking for work and have had some bad experiences with the recruitment agencies here. The consultants either pretend they know everything about me (based on my resume alone), hence what career path would suits me best without considering what I really wanna do going forward. Or they just say I need to improve how I answer certain questions (without going into details on the how and what etc cos' it's not their job i suppose).

As soon as my resume is no use to them, they want me out of the door.

Anyone out there share similar experiences?

You are lucky to meet the recruitment agency, I have been trying to meet recruitment agency for the last seven weeks and no one wants to meet me, so far only one I have meet and I was told it is unlikely I would get a permanent job because I don't speak Cantonesse! which is ridiculous given i have worked for a number of retail and MNC company. I am open to any accounting jobs but I have worked as an Financial Controller ideally permanent or temp / contract. It is very frustrating, if any one can help me out or offer me a job I am available.

thank you

Usually the recruiter will call the potential applicant according to the employer requirment. If your CV does not match them and they call you, most likely is they are doing the update for reference.

Don't be upset, as they have so many applicant, if you look for a job, be specific of your question. remind them that you open for any other position as well.

yes it's frustrating but use all the sources of jobs that you can (which I am sure you are already doing). monster and jobs db are great sources of jobs and a job job site has just launched apricotjobs.com which may be another string to your bow once it gets going. Good luck!

Recruiters do not exists to find you jobs, manage your career paths etc, they provide a service, all most exclusively to employers, when you find a good recruiter they can make a huge difference in your career path. But you have to realize they deal with 100s of people a week, they cant give everyone the personal touch people demand.

Utter nonsense, whilst I take your point there are some wasters within recruitment no more than any other industry, the trick is to find the good firms/ recruiters. Most senior executives get there positions through headhunters / recruiters, I cannot recollect a single senior executive ever getting a job through a job board or via HR.

Regarding your advice I would suggest you drop HR and contact the line management directly, otherwise you will be in some HR generalists in tray for the next 6 mths, if Bill Gates applied for a job at Microsoft via a Jobboard he would probably be rejected by an automatic bot

My experience with recruiters is not so big, but highly positive. They have been very helpful all the way. Telling me all the details, advising what to say and what not to say during the interview, how to improve my resume etc - just the opposite to what you were saying. Maybe you have been in contact with wrong recruiters?

It really depends who you go with. Some agencies and 'consultants' can be very unprofessional - they just want your details, want to use you to learn about the market, and won't give you a call back. And they probably don't know too much about the market or your career path - and will say anything to sell you a job. Some are highly specialised, helpful, and will know your industry inside out. The problem is, recruitment is a very low bar industry - no particular skill-set is required - at least at the entry level. Kind of like insurance agents in this city. So you will have the best and the worst of recruiters. I say the most important trait you can find in a recruiter is his/her truthfulness - these recruiters come few and far between. Try to go for a coffee with them first, get a feel of how genuine or honest they are, before handing out your CV. A call will do too. Better still - get introduced by someone to a recruiter who actually was helpful in helping them secure a job.

@CAROLINEW Perfect advice and summary. Meet with a selection of recruiters, be careful who you let represent you, especially as you become more senior.

It's really depends who agency you go with, better research the agency before.
As some agency are particular focus on certain industry/ post, that would be very professional.

for those agency they tell u all kind of job/ talent they could provide, that's mean they are not focus, and not professional in specific industry, may mainly focus on junior post. Don't waster time on this kind of agency
