Bullying and sexual harassment are rife in the legal profession and workplace training is having little or no effect on tackling the issues, according to a global survey of 7,000 people working in the sector.
A third of the female respondents and one in 14 men said they had experienced sexual harassment in a work-related context, according to the analysis by the International Bar Association. Meanwhile, half the women and a third of the men cited work-related bullying.
Horacio Bernardes Neto, a Brazilian lawyer and president of the IBA, said the data showed bullying and sexual harassment were “endemic in the legal profession”. He added: “It is deeply shameful that our profession, predicated on the highest ethical standards, is rife with such negative workplace behaviours.”
