Investment Banker Salaries

ORIGINAL POST

All of a sudden investment bankers have been under a lot of heat for getting insane amounts of salaries. And looking at lots of bankers leaving in the age group of late 30's and early 40's, I was wondering what are their typical salaries in US currency? The way some of them spend seems like they have pretty lavish lifestyles. Wonder if their wives ever work?

a friend of mine (associate level) had 100k USD base and got a 3-year bonus at the end of the year in 2007. 2008 was a bit higher on the base but a lot less on the bonus.

higher rank means some more base but a lot more bonus. but it also depends on which section of IB you work

Actually that sounds not what a typical high level exec would make.in IB. I guess an associate is lower in the hierachy. I heard that they make like half a millions dollar a yr, thats why there is all this controversy.

BTW what age group is an associate?

associate is 28-35 depending on background and education. the higher level guys probably make 300-500k base and 5-xxx years salary bonus (my guess)

you also have to see that the media exaggerates a lot and of course focuses on the ver top guys (like the citi guy who got 100m bonus)

what do you mean by 5-xxx?

5-8 or 10 times annual salary is/was normal i would guess. anything above would be really extraordinary (like that citi 100m guy)

I am sure, if you are saying they make around a million and a half a year or even more, it seems like a lot to me. If you multiply 300,000 *10= that is still 3 million you are talking about at the lower level or have I got the math wrong with these insane nos? No wonder the media has been going beserk with all the focus on them. I wonder if 3- 5 million is/was a common figure. And 100m is beyond extraordinary.

I met a managing director for one of the banks, i think he said head of industrial group or something similar. He has been with citibk for 13 yrs. My guess would be he is probably making 3mil total. What's your guess? I am just figuring out ppl's attitudes that go with the salary. and this guy is only in his mid-forties or maybe not even!
