Can my wife enter on tourist visa and then apply for dependent visa

Hello

Here is my situation and I am desperate to solve the problem.

I am working on an employment visa in Hong Kong (Indian passport holder).

Am getting married in February 2013 in India. My wife plans to move in immediately after the marriage. We will have an Indian marriage certificate and photographs to prove our wedding.

Ofcourse, we wouldnt have time to apply for dependent visa. My question is, can my wife come to hong kong on a tourist visa (15 day on arrival for Indias) and then once she enters hong kong, can we apply for a dependent visa for her? Will immigration department let us do this? If yes, if her 15 day tourist visa expires before we get her dependent visa, can she continue to stay in Hong Kong.

If 15 days is a problem, should I ask her to apply for a 2-3 month VISA? If yes, what kind of visa should she apply for?

Thanks in advance! Please help me as there is no clear answer on google.

Yes, your wife can enter HK as a tourist. Upon arrival, your wife can tell the immigration officer (if asked) that she's here to visit her husband.

Let your wife have with her a letter of support from you, mentioning your status, your employment, your residence, and that you're going to support her while she's here. Make photocopies of your passport and HK ID card and put that together with the support letter.

When in Hong Kong, you can apply for a dependent visa. While waiting for the dependent visa approval, she can extend her tourist visa by applying with the immigration department. With your support, first extension should be around 3 months good enough until the release of her dependent visa barring any unforeseable problems. Please share your experience with this forum how it went.

technically you can do that, but immigration discourages this and they will usually ask why you did not apply for visa before arrival.
