Can I do extra work while on a work permit, for a different employer? I'm sponsored to work in a bank but would like to do some extra work too, like teaching english. Is it allowed?

No, even unpaid work is not allowed unless you get permission from the Immigration Department. Many people assume that if it's volunteer work and unpaid, then it's allowed, but that is not the case, unfortunately. As long as you apply to the Immigration Department, it should not be a problem.

If the work is going to be paid, how does the new employer apply for a work permit, given that I already have one? I assume I can't have two work permits in my passport at the same time.

Thanks xrayspecs. As for what my primary employer would think, that's a question I have considered as well. But if there's no possibility of a work permit, it doesn't actually matter because I wouldn't be doing other work. Has anyone been in the same situation?
