Hello,
I arrived in Hong Kong mid August on a tourist visa almost seven years ago.
I then got a work visa in october of the same year.I have been employed ever since.
When will I qualify for perminent residency? is it August or october?
Can anyone with experience help me on this matter?
As always, thanks in advance.
p.s. If the answer is October
my visa expires in august - will i need to get another contract for the remaining 2 months
to qualify for residency ?
sorry if the question is confusing

1. The seven years start in October, on the first day your work visa was valid
2. Yes you do need to have a work/student/dependent visa to apply for permenent residency

Agreed that the residency bid starts on day one of work visa issuance.
If you submit your application early with all supporting documentation (tax, employment, proof of residence etc), speak with the immigration department and you may find they are supportive, you may not need to leave HKG to wait for approval.
It always helps if you can show some form of community service and or proof that you are trying to integrate / assist HK society, things like language classes for cantonese, charity contributions or volountary work are all seen as a plus.
Make an appointment with immigration department, or try and drop in and speak with the guys / girls at the info desk (earlier in the morning the better, before they get bogged down in the normal mundane crap !) The ID is a helpfull department.

Pauly, you can't apply for your PR until after the 7 years, unlike getting an extension to your visa when you apply 4 weeks before it expires.
Also, it's not necessary to show some form of community service, although it's a good thing to do. Basically, you just have to show that you've been ordinarily resident in HK for the past 7 years. The easiest way to prove this is by showing your tax returns for the past 7 years.

A friend of mine tried to apply last December 4 weeks before her 7 years were over and was told to come again after the 7 years to apply...

that is because they deduct long absence from hk if any as well. if you have been out of hk for 5 months in the 7 yrs its a bit more complex..

As far as i know...being a dependent type i think you should not be out of hk more than 3 months or else they wont valid your time before.
