HI, Can anyone tell me whether if I went to Hong Kong on a 6 moneth visa whether I am allowed to work during my time there? My boyfriend has just recently got a teaching job over there and is starting in August. I want to go with him but as of yet can't find a job and wondered whether if i couldn't get a working visa whether I was allowed to work on a normal travel 6 month visa????
Thanks

No way! Travel visa is for travel.
Having said that, there are many people who work illegally, but keep in mind you ARE breaking the law.
Why not come to HK anyway... you may find that a company might be happy to hire you, in which case they'll sponsor you for a work visa. Also, it's much easier to get a job if you are actually HERE...

I'm from the Uk so the Working holiday scheme doesn't apply unfortunateyl... Are you not even allowed to work part time on the 6 month visa? How would it work if i came out found a job and got a sponsor, would i have to leave the country to then activate my working visa???
Thanks

Ierwilliams. I don't want to put you off but maybe you should look at places like Australia which do have working holiday schemes and give young people an easy path to residency and citizenship. In HK, unless you are a lawyer - or a very gifted entrepreneur with a lot of start-up capital - there is very little hope of being offered a job outside teaching English. You are up against a highly-educated and low-paid local work force, overseas Chinese who speak Cantonese/Mandarin and Mainland Chinese. Unless you speak fluent Cantonese or Mandarin, you will not get work unless you posted to HK from your home country. Australia also has lots of educational opportunities and the economy is quite strong at the moment. However, if you have a bee in your bonnet about HK, then you should come. Also, remember that the UK put restrictions on HK people working in the UK even before the Handover.
