My boyfriend has recently been transferred to HK for work and its looking as though he could be there for quite some time.

I have spent the past 2 years studying and traveling and now am having difficulty finding work in Australia. Ideally i would like to join him in HK but have no idea where to start looking for work given that I cannot speak a work of cantonese- which seems to essential.

Im looking to get into public relations preferably fashion and beauty as I have also studied fashion design. I have checked online recruiting sites such as- www.jobsdb.com/hk, http://www.recruit.com.hk/ ,www.jobmarket.com.hk as well as job opportunities on this website and all seem to require a great deal of experience and cantonese.

I am extremely determined and want to be challenged in a new exciting city however just need some extra tips on how i could go about finding work-

is it best to wait until i get over there? etc.

would appreciate some advice.

thanks

Any company wanting to hire you would have to prove to the Immigration Department that they can't get a local/permanent resident for this position when applying for the work visa. That is the biggest hurdle for you - especially in view of the current recession. Experience is vital as well as unique skills to justify your employment to the Immigration.

You can try those guys: http://www.gemmellassociates.com/home.asp

but the outlook in the fashion industry is really bleak.

www.jobsdb.com/hk is good, most big / international companies are hiring people there.

www.jobmarket.com.hk is alright, but too much agecny.

www.recruit.com.hk is not the right place ... most jobs there are really bad paid and they are mostly local companies (as in traditional in a bad way) you won't feel right to work there

Getting married is the easiest (no so romantic eh) option to getting a dependent visa but then you have to get it transferred if you get a job, messy stuff. I have a number of friends in the same situation where the spouse with the job (male and female) had little to loose by coming over and look when they got here, in the fashion industry speaking the language helps but you might need to get something else first to get a visa and then work towards getting into fashion, it will take time to build up the network you need and trust of local's in the industry. Take a gamble, get on the plane and join the Australian Chamber of commerce, it's does not suit everyone but it is a start to meeting business people and there a plenty of owners small business on various committees who can give advise, you may then decide to start up your own business.
