Can I get a work visa while in HK or must I wait to move?

Hello, I'm looking to move to HK in october to be with my girlfriend again who lives there and I'm going to apply to be a Maths & English teacher. My question:

The immigration website states I must have a work visa before entering HK but is this the case? I intend to apply for jobs over the coming few days but likely will not have a work visa before I enter HK, will this be a problem?

Will I be refused my work visa if I am already in the country or will I simply have to go to Macau and back to "activate" it? Any experience from Expats would be really appreciated on any of this. Thank you for your time :)

My background:

English

Masters in Mathematics Degree: 2:1

TEFL - Expected completion early October

Thank you for your time

What others have done is to come (on a tourist visa), look for a job, once found one have the application submitted with the immigration department. Once approved, leave HK and the visa will be stamped upon re-entry. Now I don't know the exact sequence nor the correct timing...

I came from the U.S. while my work visa was still being processed. Once it was approved, I went to Macau for the day and it was "activated" on my return. My husband (boyfriend at the time) came on a tourist visa then applied for jobs while there. He was able to get a job but while his work visa was being processed, his tourist visa was about to expire. He went to immigration and they extended his tourist visa. His work visa was approved within a couple days of the extension expiring. Both our jobs were not in teaching.

Hello, thank you guys very much for the information. I hadn't noticed people had actually replied to this post so thank you very much. You've all convinced me I should be ok, I'm from England so I can stay over there for 3 months provided I have a return ticket (or say I'm travelling to china) so getting a visa in time should be ok.

I am a little worried it might take 8 weeks to get the visa though though, 2 months without pay in hong kong will not be fun!
