Obtaining a work visa and impact to current citizenship

Hi - I need advice about obtaining a work visa in HK and the impact on my current citizenship. I'm a US citizen while my spouse is a permanent resident of HK. We got married in HK a few years ago but moved / lived in the US immediately afterwards. We just moved back to HK and are now looking for work. For me, it seems I have two options for being allowed to work here:


1) get a job with a company that will sponsor an employment visa


2) apply for residency which will allow me to take up employment (I"m basing this on what I read online - Read More and Read More - but feel free to correct me if I'm wrong)


Assuming I am forced to go with option 2 and apply for residency, does anyone know if that would have an impact to my current US citizenship?

Your wife applies to sponsor you as her dependent. You will get a dependent visa.

Google "Hong Kong dependent visa" and follow the instructions from HK Immigration Department. It is pretty simple.

With a dependent visa, you can work anywhere in Hong Kong, and hold as many jobs as you want. It is as good as a Green Card in the US.


Nothing happens to your US citizenship.

You become an American living overseas.

You are still obligated to file and pay taxes. US is one of the few countries who tax global income. (the only other notable example is the Philippines.)
