Income tax question

ORIGINAL POST

Hi all,

I am on a working visa and commenced employment in October 2008. As a background, I am not getting any housing allowance or allowance of any sort and just get by with my salary.

I filled in one of those Inland Revenue forms to declare how much I earned etc. I received a letter from the Inlance Revenue department asking me to pay a sum of a couple of hundred HKD for last year.

Question:

1. Do I get taxed for last year although I have only worked for 3 months?

2. How do I know if I am qualified for any exemptions?

Hope someone can shed some light on this issue.

Thanks in advance.

Hi dadda,

Thank you for your reply.

The letter I received was indeed a "Notice for Payment of Provisional Tax for 2008/09".

Does that mean that the total amount I have to pay on that notice is the amount of tax that I need to pay based on my income for 2008/09 or will there be more to come.

I will definitely pay the Revenue Tower a visit when I get the chance.

Do you know if I can just walk in or do I need to book an appointment.

Thanks again.

Hi GreenValleys,

I was told to collect some IRD forms at my workplace and I filled them up, and sent them through to IRD. A month or so later, the "Notice for Payment of Provisional Tax for 2008/09" arrived in my mailbox. I guess the only way to sort it out would be to visit the IRD and ask them the question. I remember filling the form and leaving a lot of sections blank as they did not apply to me. To be honest, all tax forms seem complex to me :P. Since they are helpful, I may as well make full use of their services. Thanks all.
