Is it abnormal for a teenager to have missed periods for 2-3 months? Does she need to go to a doctor for this?

It can take teens a while to find their rhythm when they first start menstruating. Periods can be missed if you are stressed or gain/loose weight as well. But if you are worried, I'd take her to the doctor to make sure she is ok.

The onset of periods (Menarche) in a young person can commence with 'fits and starts'. It can be irregular, can stop for a while, can be painful and prolonged.
There are a few reasons why she may want to see a doctor:
1. This is a good time to discuss personal hygiene, growth and sexual health with a doctor 2. This is also a good time to discuss the HPV vaccination against cervical cancer 3. If the periods are painful or very irregular, there are medications that can regulate the cycle and make life a lot easier for young people 4. If bleeding is frequent, such as in between periods, a doctor check may be needed.
5. Pregnancy of course is highly unlikely as a reason for a missed period at this age...

Thank you Prone and Matilda! If she's sixteen, isn't it time for her to get into a regular cycle? She misses a month or two sometimes and the longest has been 3 months....does she need to see the gyn or just a gp?
