One big difference is that the corporate Yankees do it in an organized way endorsed openly by the US government, which by the way, goes out of its way to promote the interests of American tabacco companies and weapons manufaturers, in additiont to GMFs, to third-world nations.

Critics slam Obama for "protecting" Monsanto
Food safety advocacy groups like Food Democracy Now, which collected more than 250,000 signatures on a petition calling for the president to veto the CR, argue not enough studies have been conducted into the possible health risks of GMO and GE seeds. Eliminating judicial power to halt the selling or planting of them essentially cuts off their course to ensuring consumer safety should health risks emerge.
Seeking a "balance" to the newly minted law, Food Democracy Now has shifted its tactics to encouraging supporters to sign and send letters to Mr. Obama, chiding him for signing the legislation despite that refusal to do so would have expired the federal budget and triggered a government-wide shutdown this week.
Part of the template for the letter reads: "In an effort to balance this violation of our basic rights, I am urging you as President to issue an Executive Order to require the mandatory labeling of genetically engineered foods, something that you promised farmers while on the campaign trail in 2007. It is urgent that the U.S. government rectify the 20 year old politically engineered loophole and allow for open and transparent labeling of genetically engineered foods," the letter continues, "a basic right that citizens in 62 others countries already enjoy."

This is a really interesting subject.
I had this dilemma when Japanese products had their issues and China always. I am fortunate enough to be in the shoes to "select" but, what about the people who do not have a choice? I wish governments take more severe measurements on quality control as food issues will directly effect the country's health
If I speak of HK specifically, we have no choice as HK is really dependant on it's resource, food on the table really depends on which shipment comes that day. Even milk!
My husband is in the family business in Europe, I have seen how serious they are about quality control but, at the same time, I see the products we generate, 10 times expensive in HK with not the same quality as it has been shipped and taken time. But, the funniest thing is, we do not make any margin, shipping cost and intermediary costs are double the original price and only those fortunate will have access to those products. We feel sick that we cannot offer good quality at a reasonable price where everyone has access.

Not everyone has the choice of going to 2,3 shops.
I bulk buy which causes more shortage, for example, fresh whole milk. Neighbors know that our local shop, 2 of them will lack once the stock does not come in as the 2 do not cater the number of families but, science rent in th vicinity is so high that no shops are willing to open. We have a silent agreement to pass on your stock in case of shortage, prioritizing the families with necessity. Those with little children whom need it.
Everyone knows that meat counters are far better but, what if you are on a tight budget, it is a part of a balanced nutrition. Then all meats should be quality controlled at the source.

Canadians are joining an online campaign to demand that Kraft ditch the food colour from its trademark boxed cheesy noodle product. But so far, the company behind Kraft Dinner says it has no plans for change.
The campaign began earlier this month when two food bloggers from North Carolina, Vani Hari of Foodbabe.com and Lisa Leake of 100daysofrealfood.com, started a petition on Change.org. They wrote that they believe Kraft Dinner would be a healthier, more natural product without the artificial food dyes that give it its characteristic orange colour.
The women think it’s odd that Kraft Mac & Cheese – as Kraft Dinner is called in the U.S. – contains artificial food dyes such as Yellow 5 and Yellow 6, while the same product sold in the U.K. and Europe contains natural colouring.
