Dry skin in N America

Can anyone offer advice on treating/preventing very dry skin when travelling to the US/Canada in the winter?

I've lived in HK for over 12 years...was originally from Canada (I'm Chinese, born and raised in Canada) but during my recent trips to America I'd suffer from very dry itchy skin esp during the winter. During my trips I'd use generous amounts of moisturizers but it did little to help the dryness. Does anyone have any advice on how to treat this condition? I don't recall suffering from such dry skin when I was growing up in Canada, but perhaps being in HK has conditioned my body for more humid weather?

Try the Body Shop's Body Butter or Aveeno's Lotion (both worked for me)

I think part of the reason you didn't have the same dry skin problem when you were growing up in Canada is that you were younger and hence, your skin (along with a lot of other body organs/functions) were at their prime. Everything kind of dries up as we get older, and skin being exposed to the elements gets it much worse.

Try upping your intake of water, and be persistent with moisturizing. Due to the cooler weather in Canada you may be tempted to take longer hot baths...killer for dry skin. The air is so much drier there, so you will really have to compensate with moisturizers. Many of the brands sold here in HK just don't cut it for use in that drier climate. I agree with a Kmom that Aveeno is good. Aquaphor is also good.

There is a product sold here in Hk that I have tried and works when you get an attack of itchies that really won't respond just to moisturizers. It's called Pinetarsol, and it stinks, but it does get your body's skin ph level back to where it should be after a couple days using it, so well worth the smell. Available at Watson's.

Dehydration is a major cause of dry shin

Dry skin where ? On your body try E45 cream / aqueous cream / applying baby oil after applying moisturiser / pouring warm water over oats in a muslim bag in your bath water ( dont put the oats in the bath )
