Does anyone have any advice on who to call if a medical emergency arises, say in the middle of the night. I don't speak Chinese so may be a problem.

Is this an immediate medical emergency, or you want to know just in case? I can look up the phone numbers for the expat clinics, but it's not convenient at the moment. It is probably in That's Guangzhou magazine.
If you think you're having a heart attack or something that requires major, immediate medical management, tell the cab driver, "Qing, quai dai wo qu diyi ren min yi yuan" (phonetic: Ching, kwai dai woe choo dee yee ren meen yee yuan). This means, "Please quickly take me to Number One People's Hospital."
In worst case scenario, ask a security guard or hotel concierge to help you get to a "hao yi yuan" (good hospital).

just call 112. There should be someone that could speak english there, although, if you stay here for a longer period of time you really should learn Chinese! I know of some people that have stayed in China for years and still speak only english... I dont know why some people think that this is ok...If you are a foreigner in for example, the US and dont learn english, people will think that you are an idiot. It should be the same in China...
I am not saying that you are one of these persons, and I am know that this has nothing to do with your question, but I just had to get that of my chest.
