Have you try Nioxian Clinic in Central (HKG)? It is located at the building with Body Shop on Queen's Road.

Dear Smegal & Witley,

If you are still reading this site I wonder how you are both doing since you last wrote. Suffering exactly the same sysmpotms as you both including constant 'pulling sensation". Have also consulted doctors to no avail. I do find that when I leave HK for a couple of weeks things improve dramatically. So apart from stress I now wonder if the pollution here is the real factor, and as you mention so many chinese women also suffer.

Anyway if you have had any breakthroughs I would love to hear about them

Hello. To give you the full (but as brief) a story as possible: Moved to HK two years ago and noticed after the first couple of months that getting very thin at the front line (as in male pattern balding). Tried everything went to doc's all blood tests normal referred to dermatologist, given steroid to calm the scalp (although at that stage scalp giving no problems). Diagnosed as stress (useless diagnosis frankly) and type b personality (thank you dermatologist)and given regaine (only used for a couple of months). Things have limped along since then basically. However roughly three months ago things flared up very badly with scalp 'pulling' syndrome and significant hairloss (at the front but also all over this time) and my hair became extrememly dry and very brittle. Tried everything, included added supplements, washing my hair with bottled water (that gets annoying), seba med ph balanced shampoo. Eventually back to doc's last week, blood tests all normal (thyroid, diabetes, no menopause symptoms etc etc), except deficiency in calcium in the blood. But I already take calcium tablets although somewhat irregularly. So now off to dermatolgist on Thurs (Adrian Fung Hennessy road) but will not accept steroids and will insist on scalp and hair tests. If that yields nothing (which I suspect it will... yield nothing that is) then I am going to ask colleagues at work about a good Chinese doctor. After that I don't know except individual hair follicle transplant.

The only good thing I can say is that when in Malaysia for a number of years I did yoga for the last one year two three times a week and that did wonders for my overall well being and more importantly (for us) for the health of my hair. So i also need to go back to yoga asap work allowing of course.

Will keep you posted. I mentioned this website to my doctor today and she asked if you all had any solutions because she is seeing an increase of the number of women in HK seeking advice similar. Perhaps we should set up our own clinic.

Hi Witley and Milah, hope you are still checking this site. My previous login under 'Smegal' no longer exists (ED?) so I am using this new one.

Went to see Dr. Stuart-Bradsaw as suggested by Pumpkin and am very happy with the results (thanks Pumpkin). Only early stages but basically he checked upon my auto-immune system and allergies and found out that my liver doesn't function properly. It's due to pollutants (air, food, etc., NOT alcohol - I hardly drink any) and especially heavy metals which thinking about it doesn't surprise me in HK. He put me on some detox products and the pulling, redness and burning on my scalp went within a week (- had to drink some products as a start of the detox which seemed to work wonders)! He also checked my iron (a bit low) and thyroid levels upon my request (thyroids normal). He thinks my hair will stop falling out as soon as my organs (in my case the liver) are fully up to speed again. I guess we all get affected differently, with environmental factors and pollution hitting on one of our weakest organs. It makes sense and his approach is very natural and calm.

By the way - they Integrated Medicine Institute to

Hair loss has many causes, and chronic skin allergy is one of them. I have had problems with contact allergies. My allergist did some patch tests and identified the causes. Hair loss can also be caused by alopecia areata, which is an autoimmune disease. This problem can sometime be cured by something called DPCP treatment, but it must be administered by an immunologist. I have a good friend in the UK who underwent this treatment, and all her hair has grown back after having lost it for almost 7 years.

I did quite a lot of research into alternative treatments for allergies (naturopaths, herbalists, Chinese medicine, what have you), and none of it helped. Finally, we had to go back to a "traditional" allergist, and our daughter is now doing really well. My allergist didn't think any of these "alternative" approaches make any sense scientifically. I guess its best to stick to things that have been scientifically proven.
