I have been experiencing a great deal of anxiety and panic whenever I feel trapped. This has happened in taxis, in crowded elevators, in the MTR and the cable cars at Ocean Park (I jumped out before the door shut).
I feel like there's not enough air, my heart rate increases, some sweating, but basically, I want to escape.
Does anyone have any suggestions for coping/getting better?

I would suggest that you find a GP that you trust and can talk to. They will be able to help or advice you of others who can.

Sad - Thank you for writing. I tried to reply to your email, but I got an error message.
I was in counselling for this same problem in 2003. I was prescribed Xanax and also went to see a counsellor. I also took a positive thinking and meditation course. These did help, but eventually, I just forgot that I was scared of taking taxis and everything was pretty much fine in 2004.
This time, the fear is much, much more intense. I'm scared just thinking about being in a car.
I have been to see a GP twice this time. I have been prescibed Xanax again. I am going to see a counsellor next week.
Today, I went to see my Chinese Herbalist at lunchtime. I will let you know how that goes.
I have a colleague who is being treated by a herbalist as well. She didn't suffer from panic, but she could not stop worrying/thinking about work. She now works part-time is seems much more relaxed.
I think it will take some time, but I am thinking about asking for time off work to just learn to relax. I have tried the deep breathing and telling myself 'So what?!', but I'm so scared to take long rides that it will get in the way of doing my job.

I started getting them at one stage in my life. I went to see a naturapath and they gave me this stuff and after a few drops I never got them again!

Why don't you go for acupuncture? Tht may be relating to the liver balance of the yin-yang in TCM philosophy, although it seems absolute abstract. There is a good acupuncturist in Central, Dr. Poon, and you can reach him at 28818267.

Who have you been seeing??
Try Julian at Balance Health in Central at 2530-3315. I saw him a few month ago and he was not that expensive... $1600 if I remember correctly. And I was very pleased.

Suggest you learn a little NLP to understand how your body/mind is reacting to these situations. The "Neuro-linguistic Programming for Dummies" book is cheap and quite useful.
Drop me a line for any questions you might have.
