Hong Kong Pollution - Where to live ?

ORIGINAL POST

I am moving my family ( wife and 2.5yr old twins ) to HK later this year from NY. We have heard and read a lot about the pollution issue. It would seem that some consider it a real issue, others just seem to accept it, and get on with life with little or no worry. We are concerned, and want to make sure we do the most possible to reduce the problem.

We have been told the South side of HK island has much better air quality than downtown HK. Discovery Bay however looks like a very appealing place to live. Can anyone comment on Discovery Bay and pollution, relative to other parts of HK? This is one factor that we will likely consider in choosing where to live in HK.

We have lived in both areas, currently in DB. We moved to DB from South Horizons for the sake of our child, for whom the open spaces, freedom from traffic, and proximity of other children made the decision a no-brainer.

The air quality in DB is OK, but not excellent. Better than average in HK, I would say. But bear in mind that Disney are prepared to blast poisonous gases from their nightly fireworks into our air, so keep looking .... pollution is not that big a deal, and there are good air scrubbers for the home - see http://www.lifesolutions.com/ for more info

we lived in new york for 5 years before hk, and have been here for the past 12 now. we first lived in midlevels but moved to the south side when our younger daughter developed asthma. it's still not the best, but we are very happy, and her asthma is under control with very minimal need for meds. we lived in new york city, so that wasn't without its pollution issues. have no experience with living in discovery bay or clearwater bay, but both would be way too far for where my husband works (Central) and our children go to school (southside) i feel those are issues that merit consideration as well. good luck

Thanks to everyone for your feedback..all very useful.

Lyratan, I was interested in your comment on DB being a long commute from Central. I was under the impression it was less than a 30 min ferry ride, which by NY standards seems very reasonable. I was also lead to believe that getting from South side ( Stanley / Repulse Bay ) can be difficult due to traffic, in particular certain times of the day.

ozbomber,

ultimately i believe the definition of a long or short commute is relative. like nlw said, travelling to central from the southside is not bad if you leave the house before 7:30. my husband also travels a lot every week, and if he had to take the ferry from db on top of taking the train or a taxi to the airport, it would make the whole experience more "transportation intensive". other than that, the school is also an issue as our kids' school is located in the southside. i know of several children who live in db and take the ferry both ways on top of the long schoolbus ride, and we just don't like that. but like i said, it's all relative, and people should do what works for them. what's far for some may be near for others. to the people who live in kowloon or new territories, to each his own. i agree it's do-able, some of us just don't want to do it, is all.
