I've been having a problem with my hamstrings for some time (injured myself playing sports), at first it was even painful to walk but after a lot of rest, it got better and I resumed all my sporting activities, however the problem returned though not as severe as before. I'm thinking of going to visit a physio or sports injury specialist but I haven't seen a doctor yet, do physios require doctor's referrals? Would it be advisable to visit a doctor first? I'm in HK.

Best to see a doctor first.

Thanks for the advice Lynne - so visiting a GP or you mean more of a specialist?

Either should be able to give advice and a referal to physio. If it has been going on for a while a sports specialist may also be able to adise you on performance and technique improvement to prevent re-injury. Don't forget to check, if you have insurance they may require a GP referal to the specialist before covering you.
As I have mentioned in previous enquiries, as a hospital we can not reccomend doctors as they may get into trouble with the medical council(recent newspaper coverage supports why we do not do this - hospital gets no referal kick back).
If you would like further information on sports injuries please feel free to give me a call. Will be back in the office Monday 28490328.
