My baby has just started playgroup and now the family is being plagued by colds and flu. I am considering getting a flu shot for us adults. Do they really work in raising your resistance and does it work against the simple, common cold ?
Thanks for your advice. I'd hate to have to get a needle for nothing!

I've never had one - been here for 15 years - worked in a school - haven't had flu for donkeys year - one 24 blocked nose in 15 years is not bad. You will probably get a few colds and then build up resistence goo and solid, is my guess.

I have moved your question to the medical forum - you will likely get an answer from one of the doctors who monitor this... feel free to post in the Moms and Dads as well

no, do not "get the jab" - get the info. "flu vaccination is useful for very young immune compromised, and the very elderly, along with immune compromised of any age.
It is against the last year strain, and will not, in any way or manner, affect the usual "flu" which is most often not a flu virus. Nor will it necessarily protect against the current flu strain going around. And it will certainly not protect against bird flu. No way, no how.
So yes, I agree with FOTH

The US CDC (Center for Disease Control, in Atlanta) monitors the strains in China, just about ALL the flu bugs start in South China. Then they guess which will be the bad boys for next year, pick 3 and make a vaccine. They are not really 'last years bug' in the sense that they are the ones that caused trouble last year, but they are a little dated. For the old ,sick, people prone to chest infections, people in institutions etc it is a good idea to geta shot. By the way there is no carry over, that is previous years shots do not help

The flu shot helps you if there is an outbreak of one of the three strains of flu in that years shot. They do NOT help against other strains and they certainly do NOT help against the everyday coughs and colds that children get. That is why it is called a FLU shot. Antibodies are VERY specific.
