High Cholesterol Treatment

ORIGINAL POST

Before moving here doctor discovered I had high cholesterol. They did not give me meds because they could not do follow up on liver/kidney (?) while living overseas. Concerned that I may be ignoring problem by not taking meds and diet alone has not improved.

Anyone here taking meds without every 6 month check up with doctor? Any ideas or Chinese herbal treatment to reduce cholesterol?

High cholesterol is merely one of the risk factors. You would be better advised to sit with your doctor and discuss what risk factors you have, and how you can manage them. Once you have that information, you can then look at the various options before you.

There are plenty of options for alternative health care, and you can choose what level of control you exercise over the risks. But sit down with your doc first - assuming you a)have a doctor here and b)you trust your doctor.

I had something similar before coming to HK. Gradual adoption of Chinese food with lots of veg and much less spud, bread, cake and desserts made a huge difference. No need for meds! It's worth a try.

Oatmeal was the first whole food which the FDA has allowed to have a health claim on the label. I do not believe everything the FDA does is for the good of the public, but this is a good move and article [link below] from the FDA Consumer magazine should help you.

Basically it's the beta-glucan soluble fibre in whole oats which is responsible for the lowering of total and LDL blood cholesterol levels, as seen in various studies.

I think oatmeal is overrated as a cure. It is good, but only as part of a much larger lifestyle change.

Cholesterol comes mostly from the liver metabolism - for every 4g cholesterol, 1g comes from diet and 3g come from liver. So lifestyle change is excellent, but the metabolism needs to be addressed.

docboat> What are your thoughts on liver detoxification? And not just for the liver 'abusers'.

docboat>What specific test would I ask my doctor to conduct in order to address the metabolism related to high cholesterol? Could be done on trip home hopefully if not available here. Any more you can share about metabolism info? Thanks for responding.
