I have been taking antidepressants for 3 years now, started with postnatal depression and ive tried so many times to come off them but after weeks maybe months the depression always returns then followed by panic attacks, i would so like to just be normal and be happy without taking tablets, can anyone recommend an alternative please?.

Drs and therapists all say, lead ahealthy life and patients think yes, yes yes -cliches I dont need---BUT for many people exercise can be helpful, I'm not talking about going for a walk after dinner I'm talking blood, sweat and tears exercise, an hour in the gym, running 5k, get the enomorphins going.

Basically, up your vitamin intake..take centrum, lots of vitamin B (good for the nerves/brain), eat Salmon and broccoli (also brain food)....what we eat also affects our moods...try to keep your mind occupied..I get anxious if I have nothing going on in my life!! are u on medication now? Do you get physical symptoms as well? Write back and I can share my experience with you.

In ADDITION to exercise, some training in mental techniques to keep your thinking positive -- clinical psychologist type help. Literally about twenty years ago I went to about four sessions with a psychologist who taught me some "rational emotive therapy" to help with some depression. It was very helpful, and I've never anything more, other than maybe a few mental kicks in the butt and some exercise! But also, some people really do have a brain chemistry that makes the antidepressants quite helpful. I have one friend who has tried everything and the bottom line is that he gets depressed every time he goes off the meds. I suggest you not think of taking the meds as a bad thing, just be grateful that it's available and it helps. Simple fact of life, just like a diabetic who is grateful for insulin.

I have suffered with depression and panic attacks on and off for years and been on medication too. The best treatment I received was to see a good recommended therapist, learnt alot about relaxation techniques, self hypnosis, exercise and a very good vitamin intake. You can actually have a test to see what vitamins you are lacking in. I also took 'St John's Wort'. Which taken in the right dosage regularly did work for me. BEST OF LUCK

I came off anti-depressants with the help of a homeopath, I also found the excerice/eating properly generally looking after yourself to be a big help. Don't beat yourself up for taking them though if you need to take them then its no different than a lot of other medications for any other condition!

vitamin B is good for your stress levels, also try a multivitamin like centrum...currently I take 2 tablets of centrum and 2 vitamin b tablets a day, and they make a difference...I can really tell when I miss a day or two..that really hits the system! St.John's wort is supposed to be good too, but not a good idea if u are trying to get pregnant again (I'm trying, so not for me!). do try to get in touch with your emotions and deal with them...learning that helps a lot...let me dig up this website where you can do a self-help(free!) course ..worked wonders for me....you need to subscribe to their newsletter, and every couple of days, they send you can email which you read and incorporate into your emotional state...its a step by step thing and when done patiently, can help...the best thing is, its totally free...no they don't pay me, but I just wanted to share it here because it has helped me so much ,and when one goes through depression, one feels so helpless..in this case, I just want to help as many people deal with their state of mind. Ok, here it is....

just scroll to the end of the page and sign up for the free e-course. My husband found this for me and I couldn't thank him enough. Best of luck!

My girlfriend suffered the same problem, what we found is that the antidepressents worsened the problem by toxicating the body therefore causing chemical depression and also did not allow her to deal with the emotional aspects of er depression.
You need chinese herbs to regulate the toxicity of your body, accupuncture to lift your spirit and some counselling to deal with issues.
I have spoken to my chinese doctor, you can call him confidentially. He can not offer counselling but will be able to help you greatly.
I would like to add St Johns Wort is great, but you have to make sure you get it from good source as it differs drastically in quality. Also the dose you require has to be experimented with as dosages vary hugly due to things like natural levels of dopamine. Also taken it in summer in totally different than in winter and dossages have to be adjusted due to increased sun in summer. Anyone who has taken (I have for other neuroligical issues namely sciatica)will tell you it increases sensitivity to sun exposure.

Breathing exercises can really help. As can self 'hypnosis' relaxation exercises, you might want to see a psychologist who will be able to guide you with getting off the meds. Counselling is pretty important as your thoughts may be causing problems.
