It does not realy sound like an arthritic problem. Occasionally there can be a herniation of the joint capsule out of the joint, the most common place is in the wrist but it can happen in other joints. See a good family doctor

Hi, well the hand surgeon I was referred to by my family doctor x-rayed and showed me the narrowing of the joint space in the knuckle. He told me that the lump was indeed a cyst consisting of synovial fluid. He said the fluid normally would be inside the joint, but there wasn't room for it inside the joint so it was squeezed out into a cyst. He said I could remove the cyst, but it would come back when the synovial fluid regenerated. But he also fit my general stereotypical image of surgeons (a prick).

Of course we are assuming that my diagnosis is correct, the herniation from the joint is called a Ganglion. If that is the case the fluid can be removed that would help for a day or two then the body would renew the fluid and it would refill, the hernia would return.

All body fluids recirculate, the analogy that i used in telling mothers about the amniotic fluid in pregnancy is that the fluid is like a river, not like a pond. It freshens and renews.

I HAVE HAD THREE CONSECUTIVE GANGLION CYSTS REMOVED FROM MY HANDS.

THEY SEEM TO GROW BACK MORE RAPIDLY EACH TIME.

MY CYSTS ARE PAINFUL BUT I WOULD ADVISE YOU TO LEAVE THEM ALONE IF THEY DON'T HURT.

I had a ganglion on my wrist. Once I figured out which movement caused it (press up hands flat) and avoided it (do press ups on knuckles or with handles) it went away. The only time it recured is when I went back to the old movement.

Well, I think you should get it looked at and let a doctor tell you! I once had a ganglion cyst on my foot. The doctor said I could remove it, but it would grow back. He also joked that I could also hit it with a hammer if I wanted to get rid of it, but he didn't advise it because it would hurt like you know what. It was where my shoe rubbed it and very uncomfortable, but I lived with it. Well . . . a few years later guess what? A horse reared up and his hoof landed right on that very spot, the cyst was crushed, and it never came back! Had another experience with a different cyst on one of my children. It was large, right above her eye and was told it needed to be surgically removed for both cosmetic and medical reasons. A plastic surgeon did the pre-surgery workup and we were scheduled for the surgery, but . . . being a toddler, she fell on her head and banged it the day before we were scheduled for plastic surgery. Had a horrible black eye and I had to check her for concussion etc. And the cyst was gone. After about two years it did grow back to some degree but much smaller -- now it's so small that I'm sure I'm the only person who would ever notice it. So, it may or may not come back, or may be smaller. If it's really uncomfortable, get it checked out so at least you know what it is!
