Scoliosis

If the Dr says there's nothing you can do, then likely that is bc the curvature of the spine is not significant. In that case, the main thing would be to just continue to observe her- if the angle gets worse I understand there are braces or surgery. Everything I've read indicates that there are no exercises that will help.

I myself was only recently diagnosed with scoliosis. I only found out I had it bc of the mandatory chest X-ray for immigration visa purposes. All of my family doctors in Canada were sufficiently incompetent to miss this. This is why I'm somewhat aware of the treatments.

By adulthood braces aren't an option- only surgery. If your kind is young enough, there may be the possibility of only wearing a brace at night to help correct the curvature. There are also all-day braces available.

Scoliosis isn't necessarily horribly disfiguring- my girlfriend had to measure my back carefully 2-3 times to pick up the curve, and even then it was small. The only thing besides observation I can think of is to take her to a body movement specialist (I forget the proper name). When part of the body is a little out of whack, ppl compensate by using other parts of their body in different ways- this can cause pain in areas you wouldn't expect, and the "body movment specialist" can help with that.

Why not seek the professional advice of a specialist, chiropractor, physiotherapist, paediatrician and the like, instead of soliciting unqualified advice on a "chat" line such as this?

Agree with Juicer. Go with a professional opinion. It seems like you got one, but not willing to go with it, which is your choice. Second opinions, especially in the medical field is a standard mode of practice. My only advice is to seek advice from a "good" doctor rather than seek a doctor who will agree with you. There is ALWAYS a doctor who is willing to agree with whatever you say as long as you pay them. Even "famous" doctors in the US do that.

Going back to the original, scoliosis is much more common than people think and in the vast majority of cases, no intervention is needed or helpful since the effects of mild scolisis is that you have a hump on one side when you bend over. Only in VERY severe ( and rare) cases are the lungs affected, which is the medical reason for intervention.

As for therapy, there are 2 choices: Do nothing or have a metal rod placed in surgically. Exercises and braces gives you something to do but does nothing for your back. Thus taking it all together, in most cases of scoliosis, the best course of action is to do nothing.

We regularly work with children with varying degrees of scoliosis. I am happy to tell you that we have had great results with children, particularly during their growth spurts. May I suggest you come and see one of us for a full assessment of your child's spine. We will be able to assess whether they have a fixed or flexible scoliosis and offer treatment accordingly. Often, all we need to do is provide some specific stretches, and then monitor them over time. Occasionally it is necessary to do some manual treatment, involving spinal massage and mobilisation to improve any particularly stiff areas of the spine. Please give us a call on 2849-0760.

Hi -

I had scoliosis when I was a teenager - discovered by my pediatrician and I was sent to the best doctor that we could find at the time. It is a rather common occurence if your child has a growth spurt.

Mine was observed over a period of time - and in the meanwhile I continued ballet, changed the mattress of my bed, lay sleeping on my back only, and practiced walking straight. at the end of two years, my mild case (10% curvature) was straightened out.
