I occasionally suffer from migraines, and have recently run out of my first aid kits supply of painkillers. I went into a chemist, but I couldn't ask any decent questions and I don't really want to take something without knowing what it is. Does anybody know the Chinese name, pinyin or character of a reliable, tried and trusted painkiller?

Go into Watsons or Mannings look for Tylenol's red box on the shelves in the medicine area. There will be other OTC painkillers with it.
FYI, both stores have a number of branches (look for the RX sign) with English-speaking pharmacists. I found just the right cough medicine (one I would not have picked myself) thanks to a very helpful Mannings pharmacist.
They may have other OTC painkillers which are not on the shelves but more effective, so it doesn't hurt to ask. For example, I think one usually has to ask for panadeine.

Hey quick reply!
I thought this thread went to everyone in China? I am not based in HK anymore, but in South East China, hence the lack of English.
I will try and move the thread, thanks for your help.

Sorry, your post originally said "based in Hong Kong".
But Watsons are on the mainland - it actually started in Guangzhou. Even now it has a local office in Guangzhou. So look out for the turquoise signs.
Or print out a colour picture of, say, Tylenol and take it to your local chemist.
Here is a link to useful medical terms. It has both 'aspirin' and 'painkiller' in simplified (and trad) Chinese, with pinyin. Handy too if you ever have coca-cola urine (!?!?!).
