Im suffering from extreme dry eyes, just wondering what your thoughts are in relation to the impact of the environment in HK on my eyes - in particular with respect to the pollution, air condition and dry air.

Planning to move there from Sydney.

Sorry to tell you that.... it will make your eyes worse. The air pollution is getting worse and it's so hot that all air conditioners are on full blast. My eyes got so bad this year that I can no longer wear contact lenses and every morning it's so painful to open my eyes and focus need to use eye drops every hour to stop the stinging pain. I wanted to get Lasik as I don't like wearing my thick glasses but was told that "dry eyes" will get worse.

If your job doesn't require you to be on the road most of the time I think you'll be fine. And HK air is said to be of high humidity, so it is not deemed to be dry.

Betwoi, I suffered from the same condition after having lasik 5 years ago and had 2 of my tear ducts plugged which solved the problem.

You have 4 in total, 2 in each eye at the top and bottom corners near the bridge of your nose. A good optomitrist or eye surgeon will plug the bottom one in each eye - totally painless and quick procedure. Not sure how long it lasts, but I've not had problems in 5 years.

Give a call to Dr David Robinson's office in Bondi Junction (Sydney Eye clinic) - he did mine, and will give you best advice.

Thanks Cathy. I'll consider that option. Hopefully no side effects right? I'm be working indoors most of the time - a bit worried about the air con, but I think the drops and plugs should do the trick - I hope.

Hello. This is a message form Dr David Stirling, 28497822, located in Central. "If has Sjogren’s disease should get specific treatment. Most people find that HK is a difficult environment for eyes. Should come here for several days to see before committing."

Yes, was recently (yesterday) diagnosed with Sjogren's Syndrome. What is it? An auto immune disorder that affects the immune system and moisture producing glands so I get servere dry eyes, mouth, nose etc.. It's such a pain. No cause No cure almost like a phamtom disease. Is there some extra precautions I can take whilst living in HK?
