having surgery in hong kong

Have you had surgery in HK? What was your experience like? I just want to reassure my mother back home that having surgery in HK is about the same as having it in a hospital in Perth. She is very worried. I will use the public health system, I can't go private this time. Probably Queen Mary Hospital.

Yes, the QM is public hospital but it is also a top-notch teaching and research hospital, attached to the University of Hong Kong. HK doctors are accepted around the world - probably in Perth too - and this is where the top ones are taught.

QMH was in the network of institutions which worked on SARS, together with Pasteur Institute and the US's Center for Disease Control.

Let your mother also know that the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists has accredited training programmes in Hong Kong, including QMH.

There are no language problems at QM but you may find the food leaves something to be desired.

Why not send your mother her surgeon's CV? Doctors' qualifications be found in hkdoctors.com. Bear in mind that listing in this website is voluntary and if you don't see a doctor's name there (normally doctors in public hospitals), this does not mean that they are not qualified. The website serves more like pseudo-advertising but without any tagline -- just facts re qualifications, location, services offered, and consultation fees, etc.

Koala's mother may mistaken HK doctors with doctors from the Mainland.

Thanks everyone. No, my Mum hasn't mixed up the doctors here with mainland doctors - she knows nothing about either of them. She is older and just worries. I am not young, but a mother is always a mother! I've copied your comments and put them in a letter for her to read. I just needed some 'expert' testimony to help me persuade Mum that I am doing the right thing!

Koala48 -- Just curious, when are you scheduled for surgery at QMH? BTW, did you ever mention what kind of surgery you will be having?

I had breast cancer surgery done at PYN two years ago and I wouldn't have it done elsewhere because I had an excellent breast surgeon who not only did a superb job in removing my tumor (with a minimal scar), he was also great in giving me post-surgical support. In a nutshell, due to my young age, I had surgery, chemo and RT....all at PYN. I know many people who had surgery done in the public hospitals and had very good experiences there. As for QMH, it's the university teaching hospital.

All the best! Let me know if you all have any questions or need a referral....my surgeon has started his own private practice last year...these days, I help out by providing peer support to breast cancer patients. Been in HK for the past 10+ years and know a bit about the medical profession here...so be glad to share with you what I know.

All the best!
