first of all, pls check your how much is insured by group medical provided by your company before any decisions.

pinkcat is right. Private medical treatment in HK is expensive. Check your insurance coverage and see what it covers, e.g does it include complications, and the limits. Also check how quickly coverage starts for your little one.


The Matilda Hospital which is at the top of the range (and one of the best maternity places in HK) has an elective (pre-booked) caesarean package for $45,000 (private room, five nights). This does not include your OB or anaesthetist charges.


Many OBs offer their own packages and are affliated with private hospitals.

If money is no concern, find a doctor you like and (s)he will arrange everything for you. Their clinic will book the hospital for you etc. Different doctors have visitation rights at different hospitals so you'll need to see whether the OB you are comfortable with has visitation rights at the hospital you like. Go and take a look at the various hospitals, most of them have tours of their maternity wards. I highly recommend Matilda.

If you need any help or would like to have a look around the hospital please feel free to give me a call. Information is on our website if you want to get some information in advance. The OB usually books you in at the hospital of your choice but it sometimes works the other way round with ladies choosing where they want to go before having a doctor.

When I had my bub, I my OB was Dr A Ghosh whom was brilliant, ph 2877 3118. I see him at his private clinic for checks and scans etc and I had a c-sec at the Matilda. If you say your insurance covers it, definately go for the Matilda Hospital. Good luck with things.

Just curious, but why are elective c-secs so popular here, even among westerners? Until now, I thought it was just a Chinese thing.

How can I know which OBs have visitation rights to Matilda? Does the hospital have a list and I can get in touch with an of them or how does it work? I like the hospital, but I do not know any OBs yet (we are moving to HK in November and I am due in April)(this will be my third child and I had no complications at all with my children, though my OB at home is one of our best childhood friends, therefore I felt absoultely comfortable).

We also would like to know if my husband can be at present during the delivery. He was there and it helped me a lot and he we both would like him to be there very-very-very much.

All you need to do is get in touch with Matilda Hospital and they will give you a list of OBs with visitation rights. I had a C section and my husband was there during the birth so I'm sure it's not a problem.

And while we're making Ob/Gyn recommendations we were set on Matilda, did a bit of internet research to get some other options, went to Matilda for a tour very early on, decided on Matilda there and then, got a list of Ob/Gyns who work there, did more internet research (mainly on this site) on some of those listed...and settled on Dr Sally Ferguson in Wanchai. She's fantastic. A wonderful journey.
