I had an ovarian cyst abt 2cm before my pregnancy. My doc told me the same thing... size is still small, monitor it, go ahead and try for the baby. I did and was pregnant after 6 months. Had a natural birth and during the birth, apparently the cyst was also removed (by itself during the birth). So, kityuen, as long as you get your cyst monitor, you should be fine. All the best!

more information should be gathered

e.g. Is that an endometriotic cyst or just a haemorrhagic cyst?

Are the any other symptoms or signs suggesting pelvic endometriosis?

All that will have some bearing on fertility.

If it is just a haemorrhagic cyst, it should disappear spontaneously in 4 - 8 weeks.

If it is a endometriotic cyst then it is another

matter. Severe endometriosis may affect the fallopian tubes, and even mild endometriosis generates a hostile environment for normal fertilization.

You should get more information from your doctor before making any decisions or drawing conclusions.

I'd been trying to get pregnant for almost 2 year before I found out that I too had ovarian cyst. Don't know if it's haemorrhagic or endometriotic, but it did cause pain (that's the reason my dr suggested a removal surgery). I got pregnant 2 months after the surgery.

I saw Dr. Jenny Ng in Melbourne Plaza. She's very proffesional. You might want to drop in and have a chat with. It's been years though, so am not sure if she's still in the same location.

Fruity, Matilda and Micchira,

Thank you for your messages. the size of my ovarian cyst has been more or less the same for 4 months. so my doctor told me to go back to see her after one year. i may see another doctor in December. thank you.

I'm of course not a medical professional, but the term "chocolate cyst" sounds really strange. I agree with the idea of getting a second opinion, because I think the type of cyst (cause of the cyst) as well as its size will influence treatment decisions. I realize there are cultural differences, and in Eastern culture patients are not given as much detailed information. However, it seems that in this case you need to insist on more information which can be obtained through further diagnostics. In addition to surgical options for cysts, sometimes hormones are used to shut down the ovaries for awhile and see if the cyst will go away on its own. Also, it should be your decision about how aggressive to be: do you want to wait a year to see if this will resolve, or do you want to aggressively pursue treatment while you are still young and (more) fertile? In my own infertility journey, I spent too many years with doctors telling me to be patient etc etc etc . . . etc etc etc . . . sometimes you have to be assertive and make sure that heatlh care decisions are determined by your values and priorities rather than your doctor's.

Meiquoren, you had a chocolate cyst? that's what my doctor said to me. one doctor told me about hormones but there are too many side effects. i read some books about chocolate cyst and it mentioned some treatments available in Taiwan. so what's your story?

One year to check back? Are you sure it's not one month?

I was told to go back one month later (after I finished the period). I did this for 2 or 3 months. The cyst was still there, and as matter of fact, kept on growing - from about 3cm from the initial check until about 7cm when she took it out during the surgery.

Micchira,

i had it checked 3 months after the initial check. one month later i had it checked again. the size remains more or less the same. i guess that's why the doctor asked me to go back after one year.

No, I've never heard of a chocolate cyst! It doesn't sound very appetizing, nor does it sound to me like a proper name for any medical diagnosis!

Okay, now you're speaking to someone who had an ovarian cyst DURING pregnancy. When you're pregnant you get at least 1 cyst called the corpus luteum cyst until your placenta takes over nourishment for the baby. I had three ovarian cysts unrelated to pregnancy and my gynae couldn't work out whether I had them before or after my pregnancy. They kept getting bigger until they were about 6cm. Dr said that they had to keep me pregnant until I was 16 weeks because surgery before that was risky. Even at 16 weeks there was the risk of miscarriage. I was terrified. But fortunately at week 12-13, the cysts shrunk and were hardly detectable by ultrasound.

From what I heard, cysts can affect pregnancy but mine apparently didn't.

Really strange how pregnancy works...
