Hi
I injured my knee badly resently, so im now searching for the "best of the best" in the area of knees to get me back on my feet be for our first baby is coming in May. Money is not an issue since im well covered with my insurrance.
Initial verdict from the emergency doctor at Beijing United Family hostpital:
a. Torn or snapped medial collateral ligament (MCL) that connects the thighbone to the shinbone and provides stability to the inner side of the knee.
b. Very High probability of a crusiate ligament damage.
c. miniscus and other damage unknown until MRI, being done tomorrow, Monday
I am fairly sportly active, running 10-15 KM a week, doing martial arts 2 times a week, snowboarding, playing softball etc.. So i wish to get back into original shape again.
What I need:
1. I need "the best" Orthopaedic with speciality in knees to read my MRI scanning results and possibly do a surgery. This can be anywhere in asia, hong kong, singapore, japan, beijing.
Any recommendation?
2. For rehab I would prefer a physio that is used to dealing with sports active people and knee injuries locally in Beijing. Preferably an english speaking , but if the best only speaks chinese I will find a way.
Any recommendations?
who treats the chinese top atletes (national teams, basketball, skiteam, soccer team, etc) for knee injuries?
Reporting from home, with the leg elevated, compressed, iced and asking for advise with tear in my eyes :( knowing this is going to be a long and tough one to get over)

I do not have the right recommendation, but you may want to try to source for more info thru the China Orthopaedics Society/Chinese Medical Association. They had an international conference a couple of mths ago.
Tel: +86 (10) 8515 8146
Take care.

Any bad damage to medial meniscus or cruciate ligaments to the knee will require reconstructive surgery but only after around 2-6 weeks of resting to allow inflammation to subside. Investigation by MRI to confirm the injury but probably Arthroscopy exploration (usually keyhole surgery) to really confirm extent of damage.
Orthopaedic specialist in Hong Kong I can recommend includes Dr.Dan Hooley from HK specialists (www.hkspecialists.com.hk) based in Jorden House and Dr.Justin Cheung in Gaia Therapy Centre (www.gaiatherapy.com.hk), both based in Central ( They are known to deal with Rugby and other sports teams here in HK). If the advice doesn't sound right at first, its best always to get a second opinion. Good luck

Thanks a lot for you advice.
Today visited hk orthopedic specialist in knees Dr.C.C Kong.
Verdict: MCL torn , ACL snapped and need surgery.
He recommends a double bundle surgery which he states should give me at 90% normal functioning knee.
DR.CC Kong is 42y, has 17 years of practice, done surgery 10 years and do 40-60 acl surgeries a year. Done double bundle technology for two years.
Anybody know him? heard of him? good / bad? Anybody better than him in HK?
Thanks, Jesper

Hi okser,
yes he works with Jason Brockwell at sports phsicians, who I am seeing. He has a very good reputation as does the whole practice.

Ask what type of patients he has treated, how many are actual sportsmen/women thats gone back to active sports/cpmpetitions. I'm sure there may be a way to find out about 'back to sports' success rate of patients the surgeons treated over the years.

Thanks for all your advice... Good stuff
Im getting more confident that CC Kong could actually do a good job and bring me back to my sports,
I will call the clinic and ask some of those questions.
Next big question is then who is the most experianced physio for rehab on acls.
Thanks, Okser

Okser,
I would recommend closed chain execise for ACL rehabilitative training because it is safer.
Hyper-gravity stimulation training is a kind of closed chain exercise; and because it utilizes hyper-gravity load to stimulate almost 100% muscle fibres to work. It is more effective than conventional resistance training.
