Coffee versus pregnancy:

My lovely and young wife is worried she cannot conceive because of both our coffee uptakes.

She has just read in an online mag that coffee inhibits procreation. I can't believe this but she is firm.

So, does anybody have anything important to say? Does caffeine destroy the chemical structure of semen or eggs?

I would recommend that you talk to a fertility expert or doctor first if you are having troubles getting pregnant.

The issue is not so much "does coffee reduce fertility" (it does not) but rather concerns the issue of understanding between yourselves and conveying accurate information and understanding. Vital for all of married life! But yes, chat to an expert, and do also find yourself some reliable information in written form, so you have a reference for health questions.

Clinical trials have shown caffeine to help with sperm motility in men with previous poor sperm motility and have been shown to increase the incidence of conception problems, 1st trimester miscariage and preterm labour under conditions of high consumption. I'm not sure what 'high consumption' officially is but I reccon 4-6 cups a day of brewed coffee would fit. So women should make themselves their normal coffee, but not drink it and give it to their man!

I cut back before trying to get preggers and avoided all caffeine for about the 1st 5 months of my pregnancy and then after that had only the occasional ½ cup here and there and my little boy was both conceived on the 1st try and born on his due date so I guess it worked for us!

I think one of the biggest pregnancy inhibitors is thinking too much about it. Just relax and enjoy your baby dancing and when it happens, it happens!

If you've been trying for 6 months and there's still only one stripe on the test stick, then you could go see a doc but for the most part just let nature do its thing.

Best of luck with the baby making.
