I don't think you will need to be totally knocked out unless you are having some really major work done on your teeth. I am also really scared of the dentist and really sensitive to pain but I've managed to survive two root canals with the normal anesthetic that the dentist put in your mouth. It really does numb the whole mouth and you don't feel a thing.
The best thing is to have a good talk to your dentist about your fears and ask what they would recommend. If they laugh about your fears, then find a new dentist.
My dentsit was great about my pain fears (I'm even afraid when I go for a clean up!) and if you need a recommendation, let me know and I will PM you her details.

i can telkl you with rootcanals i go through the roof........i usually get a double dose of aneasthetics, however still feel extreme pain.........once the tooth is open, he will then (to help me) inject the pain killer direct into the canals, and follow through until his needle reached the bottom. he will then leave me for 10 mins to let it work again...........still i am screaming in pain.
i need be knocke out, iwant everything bad pulled out, then get a denture resting on whats still left in good condition
i brush every day 3 times why do i have such bad teeth?

Doesn't your dentist give valium to the "apprehensive"? Check and if so you can pick up a tab before your appointment.
I hate having my teeth cleaned so I'm quite happy to pay for the gas and spend the time in la-la land. ;-)

Nitrous oxide is used for its anaesthetic and analgesic effects. You're not completely out - but you don't really care. And you come back to reality quite quickly without the troublesome numbness of the injections. Some people think it's like smoking cannabis but I don't think so, also you have a few more of your faculties about you with N20. You can heard what's going on and can follow the dentist's instructions - although I always take my iPod...
The pain is greatly reduced, I can go through a complete teeth cleaning without a wince. It's very safe although it's not effective in about 10% of people.
The only 'drawback' is the temporary deep line around the nose from the tight fitting mask which, IMO, takes too long to 'disappear' (probably too vain).

greatly reduced? see now im 8 days further and still dont have a dentists appointment. i didnt think teethe cleaning would hurt at all....however rootcanal etc that hurts truely, does it help for that as wel?

By "greatly reduced" I don't feel anything for a teeth cleaning - I have sensitivity and the cleaning has me nearly throttling the dentist without the gas. Never had it for a root canal.
I think people's pain threshholds are different and some things work well on some people and not on others. Perhaps the gas/jab combo will work for you.

rebelman... 'i brush every day 3 times why do i have such bad teeth?' It's not how many times a day you brush...or perhaps it is. If you're scrubbing your teeth 3 times a day you're probably wearing away your enamel faster than you should be and bashing your gums at the same time. You make matters even worse if you use a whitening oothpaste as it effectively scours away more enamel. You can brush with bad tachnique 5 times a day and have a 'dirtier' mouth and worse condition teeth than someone who brushes once a day and does it with perfect technique.
