Can anybody please advise me about htis hydrocephallus case for my kid, if ever i can send him for an operation or for a shunt; Does the kid will have this shunt until he is alive?
Is there a survival chance for the kid (8mos.) for the operation?
Can he live long enough after operation?
Thank you...

I am not a medical expert. I am the mother of a child with hydrocephalus. I have learned that there are many degrees of hydrocephalus and many outcomes but it seems that it is usually successfully treated with a shunt. Sometimes the child will have the shunt for a few years and will "grow" out of the need for it. Sometimes he may need it for his whole life. My son is a grown man now. He did not "grow" out of the need for the shunt however, his life is not impacted by the hydrocephalus or the reliance on the shunt. The operation to install the shunt is performed by a neurosurgeon and is quite routine for them. The child will recover very quickly - only needing to rest for a day or two. Infection is the greatest danger it seems but other than doing your part to keep the environment clean, that is in God's hands. Look up hydrocephalus on the internet and learn all you can. It is not so scary when you understand what is happening.

Hi HotandBothered,
You give me hope! My child was VP shunted last July, he is doing fine and was not impacted by the hydro, but I am constantly worried about infections, fevers, colds coughs, etc. Sometimes I badly need to talk to another mother with a child with a similar condition, about impact of school life etc. For instance, we were treated very badly by an international kindergarten who were afraid of my son's condition, although he is perfectly normal and of advanced intelligence/communication skills. But they were worried he'd fall and hurt his head etc and they forced me to either give them a letter waiving them of all liability (permission to be negligent, in my books) or not withdraw him. I withdrew him and put him in a kinder school.
Are there other mothers on this forum who would like to meet up and share experiences?
Malmon_rey, how is your child now? I pray that he is fine.
Thanks!
