Ask the doctor who did surgery on her to write a letter of recommendation to any public hospital closest to your home.

For example: HK Island - Queen Mary

Kowloon - Queen Elizabeth

Thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately, the crazy cost of the Chemotherapy is at a public hospital. The surgery was done at a public hospital - costs all very reasonable. But, the Chemo costs are Mad. So funding urgently needed...

There must be a misunderstanding somewhere.......public hospitals charge very reasonable to have chemotheraphy & radiotheraphy unless you go private. Plse check again.

The public hospital cost is HK$18000.00 per session and she needs 6 sessions. Is that reasonable?

Are you asking for the new drug? Of course they are expensive. My friend is having her chemotherapy at QE and she's been charged below $100 every time.

She used to get a cream that the doctor prescribe for $10 but now the Hospital Authority wanted to save cost and gave her a substitute brand which works slower so she had to buy the better one outside from the drugstore and it cost her over $100.- and that's her choice.

I don't know the case of your helper (maybe the new drug is suitable for her if it's recommended by the doctor)or that you may want the best for her...a lot of locals just used the old drugs which is also good enough......of course putting the money (huge sum you have quoted) into consideration as it's more affordable or else it's giving more stress to the patient & the family.

Thanks again for you reply.

I will certainly ask if there are alternative drugs. The costs as we have been told so far have put, huge stress on our family and of course on the patient. She has Stage 3 breast cancer. We really want to help her but, need an afordable way...

As she is not a HK resident she has to pay the high charges. HK resident probably only pay $100 per session. Have you checked out the alternative of treatment in the Philipines where she may get some assistance from her government health care plans? If your insurance doesn't cover it then other than putting your hat around for donations I don't know what you could do. Sorry

Thanks for the replies.

Yes, we have insurance for her and guess what they laugh at you and say Chemotherapy is not medically necessary...

Fortunately FKKC put, me on the right track and I went to speak to the doctors myself - it turns out all her Chemo is free. (all with her permission and in front of her) SHe has had her first session and their was only the hospital out patient charge which is very reasonable. If she has the latest drug that just came out it would cost a small fortune. As the doctor said the Chemo they are giving her is just perfect and none of their patients use the new drugs. Also have to say that all her treatment so far has been amazing, the hospital and doctors have been great.

THat said some days I feel like I was being bullied into something...

So far the experience has been Exhausting and not great for ones household. The panic is over for now....

Fingers crossed she feels better soon and fights this ugly cancer.
