I have just found out that I have osteoarthritis in my right hip. I have days when it is painful and days when it is not too bad. I would be grateful for any advice on how to manage it, pain relief and exercise. I have been prescribed Voltaren but am not 100% happy taking this long term.

Hi,
I have a lot of questions for you...and then I'll have some advice depending on your answers. What stage is it at? do you have a lesion in your cartilage? or a hole? bone spurs (boney growth)? subchondral cysts? bone on bone (I doubt it or the pain would be much worse). Who did you see? have you had a second opinion? what options other than meds were you given and what is the follow-up plan? Are they a hip specialist? where were they trained?
I had osteo arthritis to a different joint, and I learnt quickly that most doctors are not really that great. I mean they mean well, but they have outdated knowledge and don't always give the best advice in the long-term.
Arthritis degenerates, but there are lots of minimally invasive proceedures which have great chances of susccess if you catch it early enough. The further it progresses the more drastic the surgery (or the less chance of the minimally invasive ones have of working!)
Voltaren has quite a stong effect on the body and should not be used long term, so if this is a long term pain management plan you really do need to reconsider. Also DO NOT drink on voltaren! Really bad idea (from personal experience, trust me!) If you have to drink and take meds, then codeine all the way. Also always take it with food!
Well let me know the answers (or PM me) and I'll give you my somewhat educated (but not medical) opinion on what you should do next (mainly who you should see).
Just to make you feel better though, after finally getting some good surgical advice my problems are solved and I'm back doing sport and everything pain free so don't get too down about it, it can be resolved, but just don't wait too long or you may miss some good opportunities to fix it easier! =)
