Silver filling removal...Specialist dentist please!

advice please! I am terrified to have 4 silver fillings removed from my teeth and replaced with crowns and possibly a root canal. Met with 1 hk dentist who showed me high tech photos of my teeth with actual holes in the fillings!


I realize that these must come out, but I have read horror stories of non-specialists removing these fillings resulting in lead/mercury leaking into the bloodstream. (of course, there is already leaking as I have seen the holes and deterioration with my own eyes!)


So anyone with experience in having these old silver fillings removed...please reply with a reccomondation. Also heard some horror stories about infected root canal jobs. any recommondations of fantastic dentists in this area would be appreciated.


btw...the dentist wants to charge 5,000hkd per tooth! is this a fair price?

the mercury wont leak into the blood stream so there is nothing to worry about. and there is no need to replace these silver fillings if there isn't anything wrong with them.


as for the root canal, 5000 hkd is a fair price, but you will always need a crown after to protect the root canal treated tooth, otherwise the longevity of the treatment may not be ideal. crowns can cost 4000+


you can seek a second opinion.

Although some ppl have said that fees are slightly higher than market, the Costello Brothers practice in Code Plaza has a bunch of really good, highly qualified dentists and they have been in HKG forever (the 2 brothers are American but learned Cantonese!)....anyway, you should consider going there for a 2nd opinion at least before paying for flights, etc. to BKK.


Remember, the beauty of a 2nd opinion is to compare what the docs are telling you and also to probe on other courses of treatment you could get and also to compare prices. You'd be basically doing that in BKk anyway.
