Elbows in when using tricep dip machine right?

I've just signed on w/a personal trainer & was bit surprised when he asked me to stick my elbows OUT when using the tricep dip machine. I'd previously thought i should to keep my elbows IN and parallel to the handle bar..didn't argue at the time as i thought things might've changed in the last few years. Now from surfing the net I see most advice is to keep elbows in...just wanted to check if anyone heard of any good reason for keeping elbows out? this is making me question the trainer's competency. Thanks.

Dump your trainer . Sure his competency is questionable.

Blaney - Thanks for yr reply. I did subsequently ask the trainer and he asked whether the seat was tilted in a certain way or not in the videos I'd seen on the net, so I guess it might depend on the circumstances.
