Dermatologist for Western Skin

I'm looking for a derm dr for my face. Since I moved here it has gotten really congested and I break out a lot. Does anyone know of a good dermatologist?

Check if the people you see are really dermatologists. In HK, people with a diploma in dermatology claims they are "specialists". Some of these diplomas are the medical equivalent of a weekend training course. Some are more in depth and may even last for weeks on a distant learning program on their computers. (Only because the course organisers wouldn't send all the pdf files in one go for the "students" to self-certify having read and understood the materials. Like clicking the "yes" button on software licensing agreements.) Some, of course, are genuine but they are still not qualified dermatologists. A diploma from even respected teaching institutions will typically only offer "...will give a solid foundation on which to pursue further postgraduate training in dermatology." At best, like a foundation course before entering an art college (do they still have them, foundation courses?)


In Singapore, for example, to qualify as a dermatologist, a doctor needs to obtain a post-graduate degree in general internal medicine or paediatrics which may take up to 5 years before acceptance into a full time dermatology training programme in a recognised dermatological institute lasting 3 years. Having a diploma in dermatology or diploma in family practice dermatology alone does not qualify a doctor to be a dermatologist.


Despite the dragonian controls of self interested groups in the medical professions in HK, confusion of this type is rife. I have seen people with a "family practice" diploma claimed that they are paediatricians because of a little trickery in the wordings on the description of their titles. Caveat Emptor indeed and you thought you only had this type of problems buying Rolexes in Temple Street.


However, if all you need is specific skin care advice, a skin care specialist should suffice.


Such as someone like Jenny Li who has a background in pharmacology now operating an natural skin care business. Google Jenny Li, Prinstine, pharmacology and her details should pop up. She has vast experince in dealing with this sort of things.

As Pumpkin and I have been suggesting Dr Simon Ku (in Central 2525-2212) in the other posts. He is really professional and patient. He checks my moles regularly, took out a few sun spots and BCCs for me (and my husband). I think he is seeing many Westerners like us. Hope that this can help.

I have been with this forum for a while and this is the first time I register and post. Last yr I read Pumpkin's post and saw Dr Simon Ku for a dark mole on my thigh. He recommended that it should be removed ASAP as he spotted some atypical features. OMG, it turned out to be a melanoma-in-situ! He said that I was lucky to have it removed early before it really transformed to a frank melanoma. Thanks God! I am still alive!

Dr Simon Ku burnt some of the pre-cancerous sun spots on my face, you can consider him.

I did go to see Dr Ku to have my body checked for skin cancer. He picked up a lesion, which I thought was eczema for yrs, and it turned out to be Bowen disease, which he said is a precancerous condition. Lucky to have it done before it becomes a real cancer.
